CELEBRATED FORGED LETTER.

jjkvt York Aug. 16. Tho long-de-IsTtnt
expose by United States Com-
missioner John I. Davenport of the
Morey letter will be published to-nior-
row morning. It makes a book of 150
pages. It is largely mado up of fae
similes of documents showing the
fnrfccrv in its various forms. The nar-
r:tive isonlya brief part of tho whole
viilunie. '1'lio book aots forth tho person
who actually penned tho forced Morey
letter. Ho was a lawyer of this city
named Henry II. Hadley. Davenport

was committed on or about October Ud.
lisi). Tho forgery according to Hadley'a
adniissioii and eont'ormitory evidoiieo
was collected by Davenport and was or-
iginally in the form of an extract
from a supposed interview with lien
(iai lield. Davenport possessod.himself of
about 1MM letters written by Hadley
between IS7.'1 and 1S7H and find all the
distinguishing marks for orthography
and ealegwiphy in them and tho forged
letter. Hadley always mispnlled the
word "religiously" as it was unspoiled
in tho forged letters and all the words
ending "ies" such as enemies he spelled
with tho linul "ys" as such word "com-
pany" appears on the forged lettor. In
his genuine correspondence ho invaria
bly dotted tho letter r when it occurred
ili a word containing i. It was on dis-
play that this evidenco of tho guilt i f
II ad ley confessed his part in tho crime.
Hadley admits he wroto tho name
ilenry L. Morey in the register
at the Kirkland Homo Lynn Massuchu-
setlsind substituted it for tho name Ueo.
('. Morey in the allidavit Mrs. (Mara
Moroy deelaring lie was her son. These
forgeries wero nindo to sustain tho ori-
ginal forgery. Thero was no such man
as H. I. Morey to whom the forged let-
ter was fsupposed to have been written
nor was thero ever such a person as
John V. tioodall who claimed to have
been tho executor of II. I. Morey and
who transmitted tho forged letter to tho
Truth. Hadley wrote the tioodall letter
also. JIo says that a week or
ten days before tho publication in
tho Truth of the Morey letter Charles A.
Dana of tho New York Sun was told
that such a letter was in existence and
upon Ins expressing a doubt thereof
his" informant assured him such was
tho'eiwi) and that ho believed. UWt he
could obtain it and show it to him ( IHma.
To this Mr. Dana said ho behoved if any
sii"h letter w as in existenco it was a
forgery and ho wished to have nothing
to do with it. Lindsev like Morey was a
fictitious person and the man Vi'lirien
who personated him on the Philip ex-
amination was arrested for forgery and
nndoonfcsw.'d.is now serving a term in
Sing Sing prison for that ollenve. The
language of tho Morey lettor is shown to
have been culled front speeches of Cut-
ler in New Jersey Williams in Wiscon-
sin l'hilin in Kansas l.uttrell in Cali
fornia and others on tho Chinese b ill
anil from the testimony of Henry
tieorgo and others before tho House
Committeo on the Chinese immigration

that (iarliold never used paper with the
peculiar heading of the sheet on which
the forired letter was written and the
style of the paper was never issued diir

Yesterday evening a middle-ated
man looking the worse for wear and the
ups and downs in this life limped hur
riedly into Hickox A Patterson's drug
storo groaning as though he was in
great agony and called lor fifteen grains
of morphine. Tho clerk who doubtless

dreamy drug and was on tho eve of put-
ting it into a box and labeling tho
same according to tho rules and regula-

groaned louder than ever and reached
his hand eagerly for tho paper that held
it. With the mental thought "poor fel-
low" the clerk handed him the lit'teen
grains which the party thrust into his
mouth paper and all. The sympathetic
clerk had rushed to the ice-cooler to
draw him a draught of water
but lo and behold when he
turned he was astonished to seo the poor
cripple streaking it down the street as
