CHIEF OFT1IEC1IOCTAWS
jetoineT. Carpenter One of Hie Vic
tinit of the Kcccut Dnel in tbe t hue-
taw Nation.
A Tribune reporter ba3 a conversation lust
ereiiog with Lfflore Carpenter of tbe In-
dian Territory a cousin of J. T. Carpenter
prince chiuf of tbe Choctaw Nation who
was mentioned in yes'erdnj's dispatches at
having been killed in a duel in tbe Creek
Nation aa bad also bit opponent C 1. Amos
Price. Mr. Carpenter had met tbe unfort-
unate victim of tbe code duello only a week
ago and was tbockod at tbe sad intolligonce.
Hii intimate acquaintance with tbo check-
ered career of the dead duelist will be of
special interest.
I knew bim well said Mr Carpenter and
hit Ufa was a checkered one indeed. Jerome
T Carpenter was born in Jackson II toes
county Mississippi and at the time of hia
death was only 85 years ol age. Be was the
third son of CouctArmand Henri Carpen-
ter a scion of one of the most illustrious
families of France and his mother was JJtnila
Leflore a Choctaw lady of French Olfac-
tion. She was the only daughter of Col.
Lou's De Leflore a French officer who
intermarried among the Choctaw Indians
and became their chief. Col Leflore was the
father of tour sons and one daughter
and at the death of Louis de Let
Core his eldos son Greenwood Le-
flore became chief of tbe Ckoctaws a posi-
tion be held until 1830. In that year be
made the treaty ard sold tbe reservation In
the state of Mississippi to the United States
government through President Jackson.
When the Indians were removed to their
present country another brother firazile
Leflore became their chief.
What became of the two families!
Both the Ltflores and the Carpenters re-
mained in Mississippi and at tbe commence-
ment of the late war were reputed to be tbe
wealthiest and most extensive slave-owners
In the south. Armand H. Carpenter after
marriage with Miss Leflore studied law and
settled in Jackron Mies. where he was
recognized as one of the leading lawyers of
the south. He died in 1852 leaving a
nUnia arA frtllF Attn. llh llvin.f In
1860. She was survived by two sons under
ago Jerome and Surry who by their
mother's request were emancipated by a
special act ot the legislature.
Was this Jerome the one who was killed
in the duel?
The very identical personage. When the
war broke out be enlisted in the southern
arrav and was a private at tbe ate of fifteen
years under General Lee in Virginia. He
was wounded at the battle of Malvern Hill
Julr IS. 1862 and discharged from the
army. As soon as he got well he enlisted
again this time as a private in General Joe
Johnson's bodyguard. Tbe general became
attached to the young soldier and made him
tQ9 bearer of many an important dispatch
one in particular where he carried Johnson's
last dispatch to Pemberton before Grant got
Vicksburg completely surrounded.
Was it true thai be was with Maximil-
lian! "Tea after the war ended Jerome went to
Mexico and having letters of introduction
to the Emperor from influential people was
placed in command as Colonel in Max-
imillians armv. He commanded the Em
peror's bodvguard and was on such inti-
mate torms'with Maximlllian that when this
unfortunate candidate for an imperial throne
on American soil was condemned to death
be too ws sentenced to a similar fate."
"How was this averted V '
''He only escaped the fate of Maximillian
and his military advisers by tbe intervention
of Secretary Steward. He was the youngest
officer in the army and was roputed to
be as brave as a lion. In recogni-
tion of bis steadfast devotion to
the ill-fated Maximilian Emperor Francis
Joseph conferred upon him the title of baron
and offered him a commission in the imperial
army of Austria He declined tho honor
and returned to Louisiana where be re-
mained a short time with his uncle Colonel
Joe Kearney a laree sucar planter and a
half brother of his father. Ho soon tired of
this life and went to Eypt in 18G9 with
General J. B. Loripg his old confederate
commander now at tbe bead of the Egyptian
army. Jerome became an officer under the
Egyptian government though ill health
forced him to resign after being there two
years. He then went to Australia where he
bad an estate but being of roving habits
be soon ran through a fortune there
and returned to the United States. Ho
undertook to run a line of steamers on the
Mississippi but was unsuccessful and at the
time he met his death was nuking arrange-
ments to settle down and live within tho
nation. He was speaker of the grand coun-
cil and the last prince chiof by inheritance.
I)om he leave any children?
He lvo a wife but no childron. His wifo
was a MUs Cnumley of Cincinnati at which
plsca the now is. Jorome was a man of
considerable wealth though it is tho law of
the nation that whore thoro is so issue after
marriage all property is withheld from tbe
wife where the wifo has no Indian blood
. and the properly which wus his by inheri-
tance was so stipulated.
