Here is a volume of money that ought to
-satisfy tho hungriest of greeubackers
nearly $29 for every soul of the population.
It is shown tost $273370000 of this was in
the treasury $223744000 in tho national
banks: f 1 1 030000 in tbe slnto banks and
' $17072000 in the savings banks leaving
. $871882000 in tho hands of the peoplo. The
comptroller refers to the preference of tbe
peoplo for paper money. "Tbe peoplo
throughout the country" says he ''every-
where ask for pnpor and the banks lie J
difficulty in supplying the demand and
tk like difficulty in inducing their detlors to
accept ooin in payment." Even tho pre-
ference of the treasury llsolf for paper money
was so great that it is only recently that tbe
banks have boon permitted to redeem
their circulation st th treasury in tho gold
coin of the constitution. Tho comptroller
- seems to lament thu popular desire for pa-
pjt money since It may cauto tho people to
tSrgel that legal fenders and national bank
notes are not real money but only promises

For out of town consumers thojeypura gas
works supply gas compressed to about three
atmospheres by means of a putnp driven by
a bullock. The compressed gas is then
delivered in a wrought iron receiver to the
point of consumption where it is either trans-
ferred into fixed receivers and burnt by the
aid of suitable regulators or is delivered iuto
small portable or service gasholders and
burnt in tho usual way. A ghat or landing
stage two miles distant is thus supplied
with four hundred cubic feet of gas every
day which is consumed by thirty jets each
burning one and a half cubic foot per hour
for nine hours. There have not been ary
icciJent8 from the distribution of gas in tho
portable resorvoirs or otherwise. As rail-
road carriages are also supplied with com-
pressed gas it is tvident that the Introduc
lion of this branch of sorvice hus widely ex-
tended the utility of the establishment. An-
other peculiarity of the the Jay per undertak-
ing is tbo necessity that exists for the mana
gor to unite the attributes of a farmer
to his other acquirements for tho purpose of
Kocuring a const-'.t and cheap supply cf raw
material for gas making. Lai year the
