Work on the New Orleans Fa' ifie is pre-
greesii'g favorably. Many of the while la-
borers have become demoralized on account
ot the hot weather but their places have
been more than replaced by negroes from
Georgia Florida and Alabama. A large
force will shortly be at Work on the thirty
ninth mile upon which the Mansfield depot
is located and as the work is light it will oe
Itpidly completed.
A few days ago a negro died under suspi-
cions circumstances on Mrs. Poche's place
tnree miles below Tbib .daux. An investi-
gation by the coroner established the fact
that the man bad been poisoned. One Ida
Carter was arrested on suspicion and is now
in Jail. The deceased had Just married and
returning borne partook ot some dinner in
which was a chicken that contained the
poison. A part of it was thrown into the
yard. D gs and chickens that ate ot it
died. Suspicion points very plainly to the
prisoner as the guilty one. Jealousy is at
the bottom of the trouble.

The following utterance baa been exter..
sively published on the authority of the Hon
Lewis Ltwrence of Ulica. It was about
the time of tbe decision in favor of the
Louisiana fraui by the electoral commis-
sion: One night I was with him in his room
silently smokirg while Conkling walked up
and down like a raging lion. At laBt he
broke on': 'Lawrnrce. I can't ke p com

are rotten with corruption and after
having taken everything else tbey are
bouni to steal too presidency. Sherman
reeks with plunder. Wbeeler is a virtuous

nounce the whole thing to-morrow and call
on honest republicans to give the election to
Tilden to wbom you as well as 1 know it
belongs.' I told htm it would drive him into
tbe democratic party and he said "Let it
drive; there are mora gentlemen and fewer
hogs than with us." These were just his
word".
Mr. Conkling should have acted on that
bonei' and iniignant impulse then. It mty
not bo too late even now. Let bim tell the
