Dr. Frank Norris
Declared Not Guilty
Tuesday night at Austin aft-
er a trial lasting more than two
weeks, Dr. Frank Norris was
declared by the jury to be
"not guilty" of the murder oi
D. E. Chipps prominent busi-
ness man of Fort Worth.
The verdict of not guilty
brought in by the jury alter
1 ballot had been taken almost
precipitated a scene in the courL
room which has stood staunch
and dignified for 50 years.
Norris friends were there and
the cautious Judge J. R. Ham-
ilton sensing the isituation,
warned the crowd not to make
a demonstration on penalty oi
fine and imprisonment.
Norris surpressed his emotion
after the verdict was read, even
tho his friends surged around
him, until on the steps of the
courthouse he met his chief de-
fense attorney, Dayton Moses.
They clasped each other in
their arms and then the evange-
list wept. -w " Z
Crowding behind, around
him and in front of him, Norris'
followers pushed him down the
street toward his hotel.
Mrs. Norris and her two
young sons who had sat by
their father and husband dur.
the last two days of the trial
were almost pushed to one side
by the throng.
Meanwhile another scene was
taking place in the old and se-
cluded vaults of the Travis
County Courthouse. Fifteen
year-old Dexter Elliot Chipps,
son of the slain man, had crept
' to weep after he had
heard the verdict that turned
the slayer of his father free.
