into the sunny street. Angela watched through
the streaky window as he mounted a patched-up
bicycle with a pile of notebooks tied to the back
fender and teetered down the street, weaving
around parked cars and trash cans before he
turned out of sight.
Roger swung out of kitchen door with a
plate of steaming enchiladas in one hand and a
plastic basket of French fries in the other. Angela
quickly extinguished her cigarette in a stainless
steel spoon.
"We don't have the fries with peels." He set
the food down on the table. "But these have that
red spicy stuff on them, kind of like straight curly
fries. And look!" He set a fresh fork by her plate.
"I brought you a clean one!"
"Hey, Roger," Angela said, motioning out
the window, "who was that weirdo?"
"What weirdo?"
Angela glanced over at the counter where
the remains of two pie crusts leaned against an
empty coffee mug.
"The one with the cheap shirt that ordered
two servings of banana creme pie."
"Did he look like Nicholas Cage on a bad
day?"
