Using this Catalog
The academic program is described in detail arranged by department
in each college section of this catalog. The departmental descriptions
should be used in conjunction with the Degree Plan Notebook
(available in Deans' Offices, the Registrar's Office, the Welcome Center,
the Brown Library and department offices), which contains a visual
depiction of each approved degree offered at ACU.
For more information on degree requirements, see the departmental
sections of this catalog or contact the major advisor.
Schedule Bulletins are published prior to the beginning of registration
periods for spring, summer and fall terms, near the middle of each
long semester. An up-to-date schedule of classes is also available
online at www.acu.edu/schedulebulletin.
Courses Offered at ACU
See the Course Descriptions section of this catalog.
Principles for Scheduling Classes
Past experience suggests that failure to comply with the following
suggestions often results in academic and/or scheduling problems for
the student.
1. Be familiar with the catalog, especially those sections that
relate to the major, before seeking counsel from an advisor.
2. Seek counsel from the academic advisor and/or
department chair.
3. Follow the requirements for the major as outlined in the
department section of the catalog.
4. General education requirements (University and Degree
Core requirements), except advanced courses, should be
completed by the end of the sophomore year.
5. Some courses are offered less than once a year Failure
to schedule these courses at the proper time may
delay graduation.
6. Before enrolling in a class, all prerequisites for the course
must be satisfied. If this is not done, the student will be
required to withdraw from the course. The experience
may prove to be both frustrating and time consuming.
Admission to Major
1. Education majors should apply for admission to the teacher
education program with the Department of Education during
the second semester of their sophomore year, or near the end
of their first semester at ACU if they are transfer students.
Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.70 for admission
into this program.
2. Social work and nursing majors must also apply for admission
to upper-division programs. (See department sections of
this catalog.)
3. See the appropriate departmental section for information on
admission to a specific major.
Academic Advising
Abilene Christian University considers competent academic advising
as a vital responsibility in educating its students.
The student and advisor, in a friendly, supportive and professional
relationship, share responsibility to accomplish:
* Clarification of life and career goals;
* Development of educational plans;
* Selection of appropriate courses and other
educational experiences;
* Interpretation of institutional requirements;
* Increased student awareness of educational
resources available;
* Development of decision-making skills;
* Referral to and use of other institutional and
community support services, where appropriate;Registrar's Office .......................................... 674-2235

All entering freshmen and transfers with fewer than 22 hours toward
an ACU degree enroll in University Seminar. The University Seminar
instructor serves as the academic advisor through the initial semester.
After the first semester, students who have declared a major are
assigned two advisors: a degree plan specialist and a faculty advisor.
The degree plan specialist assists students with their degree plan,
advising release codes, degree audits, graduation applications,
and other technical aspects of completing a degree. The faculty
advisor assists students in developmental goals, internship/research
opportunities, and program/vocational decisions. Undeclared students
are advised in the Office of Career and Academic Development until
they have chosen a major.
All freshman, sophomore and undeclared students must meet with
their degree plan specialist or faculty advisor prior to registering for
courses. Students on probation or juniors and seniors with a GPA
below 2.5 must meet with their degree plan specialist or faculty
advisor before registering for courses. Some academic departments
may require all students to meet with a degree plan specialist or a
faculty advisor prior to registering for courses. All students should
meet with their faculty advisor at least once a year. Contact the Office
for University Academic Advising, 325-674-2212, Hardin Administration
Building, Room 309, for more information about advising.
