BOOKS FOR CAMP LIBRARIES
A List by Franklin K. Mathiews
Franklin K. Mathiews, Director Li-
brary Department, is continually working
with public librarians for increased circu-
lation of what may be called scout litera-
ture. He has recently contributed to a
library publication, a list of titles recom-
mended for loan to camps.
_ This list is published here as a sugges-
tion to camp directors to request camp
library branches for their own boys' use.
Mr. Mathiews writes:
"I am pleased to say the Public Li-
brary System everywhere has been most
generous in supplying this need when
asked, and in many instances, not waiting
to be asked, have offered up to the limit
of their ability to furnish a camp library.
Indeed, so generous have the librarians
been in this regard that I am reluctant to
present a list of books for such purpose,
for my fear is that instead of accepting
it as suggested many will think that the
books proposed are the best and only
books, and straight way purchased a
goodly number of them when doubtless
books on their shelves would do quite as
well or even better. However, here goes
for a list of books that I would select for
my own Scout Camp Library:

Victory Loan trophy won by Atlanta 3 for selling greatest number of
individuals in Atlanta District. Won't this Minnerwerfer make the
boys military? No, they are taking it to church. Won't it hurt the
church? No, it was designed to, but it doesn't act alone and these
scouts aren't made blood-thirsty by it.

When dare-devil
Schreyer met with
his fatal accident
while giving an
exhibition for the
benefit of the Sal-
vation Army in
Van Cortlandt
Park, New York
City, the Boy
Scouts of the
Bronx demon-
strated that they
were prepared.
Five hundred
scouts from the
Bronx Council
had reported at
the park at the in-
vitation of the
Campaign Com-
mittee of the Sal-
vation Army to
assist the police in
handling the
crowd. When Mr-
Schreyer struck
the edge of the
tank and fell to
the ground, the
crowd began to
surge upon the
field. The scouts
were prepared for
such an emergency
and staffs and
ropes were imme-
diately put to use.
The scouts re-
mained at their
posts until the last
people went home and in this
the thousands of excited spec-
were kept out of the field.
