The nomination of Governor Roberts as
our readers know was accomplished on the
first ballot. Had the delegates been allowed
to vote according to their inclinations he
would have failed' but through tbe successful
manipulations of his frioudi in tho county
conventions especially in the western por-
tion of the state where the more progressive
people of tbe state are to be found many op-
posed to Roberts were instructed to vote for
him and "Simon pure Alcalde mon" were
determined to stand by bim under any and
all circumstances. With them it was puroly
a personal light and they reckon d not what
the consequences mteht be. The 80000 or
100000 Democratic majority in the state
made them arrogant and defiant. But he
received tho nomination and the Democrats
of the state should make the best of a bad
bargain by electing1 him.
A Lamentable Fact.
farU North Texan.
O. M. Roberts was Dominated for governor
at Dallas on the first ballot JMo matter
how deep may be our regrets nor how sadly
he news falls upon us wo shall do our duty
as a Democrat. We have battled hard
against this much to be regrcttod departure
of the Democracy of Texas we have honestly
and earnestly sought to defeat the blow but
the majority is against us and we know but
one lino of duty to give up tho fight and
fall into ranks. Wo regard the nomination
as a most unfortunate one we cannot see
much goldon promise for the early develop-
ment of the resources of our state and with
us tbe best inspiration we will have in the
campaign will be our hostility to the Re-
publican party our aversion to tho success
of tbe Ureenbackert and Independents and
our desire to aid in calling acceptable men
into tho legislative council at Austin.

Governor 0. M. Roberts was elected on
tha first ballot.nThi shows his popularity
does it not? He received 414 votes and
Sayers only 101. Still the old Alcalde ro-
csivod lengthy cursing from whom? A few of
the prejudiced minority. Prejudiced because
Governor Roberts did not sink the state by
avislunt! out the state revoiiuo. I no lauor-
inc classes have creat roasors to bo proud
that such a man as Governor Roberts occu
pies the iruberriatorial chair. A man with
an unbiased mind and of true principles a
man who ponders well the interest of our
uovernmetit who unmistakably hag an eye
ingle to all classes of mankind and who can
approximate tho wants of Texas who has
dono as much as Governor Roberts without
reirard to tho frowns the curses and condem
nations of men should now havo a rest. We
have reasons to believe that in two years
mors of his experience in tho state executive
chair he will set the fruits of his toil before
the deoplo in a sa'.e and prnisoworthy man-
ner. Wo Take our t'ron-Strnlghl.

The old alcalde's name floats at our mast
head this wock and unless our chief takes it
down when he returns it will stand there a
source of regret and disappointment
tnrougnout tuo campaign uomocratic
unity demands that wo enduro this nlllictiou
for two yoars vet and bo far as we aro con
cerned we aro going to gulp down our share
of crow as a 'moderate improvement on
turkey-buzzard. It's a bard choice but
still a choice after a fashion. Sut Luv-
ingood's daddy once undertook to invent
au improvement upon the science or lo-
comotion by acting "hoes" himself. He
ovorshot the mark and in the language of
me immortal out aotea instoaa tlie part of
a "cussed mule" by running away with tho
gopher plow and loping off a twonty-foot
bluff into a creek to escape a nest of bald
hornets. The Democratic party of Texas
has modoled aftor Sut'j parental t ncestor
and though it will pull Roberts through it
ill be upon Just tho scale that old man
Luvingood buttod up the sassafras field by
"bustina" up his plow and harnojs and ever
lastingly spoiling bimsolf as a "hoss." If
me ro-nomination and re election of Roberts
does not perpetuate a policy of government
that it all but ruinous to the interests of the
state it will so far strengthen the policy
within two years that it will take twenty
years to undo the danage which is inevitable.
