HRI VUL'S WASHINGTON LETTER
Correspoudenos of lh Herald. .
IUkfku's Kehiit Jnne 2 1880.
Some of my readers may perhaps reraom-
ber that I wrote the Ukkald one letter from
the historic Korry given a century ago to one
Harper by Lord Fairfax and lince then an
heirloom in the family. Well hew I am
again with(the turbulent rush of the Shen-
andoah on one aide and tbe placid murmur of
the Pi'totuao on the other. Bolore me as I
sit at my favorite window the Heights of Bol
ivr rise In verdant beauty bore
and there bedight with cottages; on my right
are Maryland Heights and on the summit of
the highest height a farm breaks the mon-
otony and gleams out like a bright day in a
rugged lifei on the left old Loudon's hills
ascend in gloomy splondor their sides riven
into great assures which the new growth of
pines and cedars do not entirely conceal and
varied by huge bouldorsof gray stone which
bear silent witness to some great agony of
nature in ages past.
If I turn around I can see the confluence
of the two rivers and the flaw of the Potomac
for many miles. Everywhere I look I see a
new beauty for the same scenes change with
every hour of the day. W hat a Joy it is ! I
look and look and am never Batislled with
gazing. I shall be content with this for a
fuw days and then I shall feel a longing to
explore those heights and shall take long
toilsome Journeys up mountain sides to tbe
imminent danger of my bodv and the great
injury oi my apparel. But they are glorious
these long scrambles alone with natur and
I bring home such an appetite that our ex-
cellent housekoeper now complains of any
waste from my sido of the table. If any of
you should chance to oorae hitherward dear
readers I beg you will sfcrn over a day at the
Forry nd ask for the "LoCkwood house"
which Is on Camp Hill above the village
where I will be most glad to soe you.
I hate to turn from the sweet and noble re-
pose about me to the turmoil of politics
not because I don't like politics for
I gonerally revel in them but because I am j
tired out with trickery machine running and
the pitiful scramble for popularity no worse
than that for partisan favor. It does not
even rise to the questionable dignity of party
proferment Just think of it everybody
knows that Grant is not the favorite with the
rank and tile nor ev. n with the leaders of
the Republican party yet everybody fears or
hopes as the case may be that Grant will be
the nomineo bocause Conkling and Cameron
will it so and because they have money at
their command to make it so.
Every one knows also that Tuden is the
choice of a very small minority ot the
Democratic party yet every truo Dem-
ocrat fears he will be the nom-
ineo of the Cincinnati convention and that
his money will buy the nomination. It is
shamoful t hoar people talk ot buying up
delegatus to a convention of Statos as if they
were eggs or .cabbages. I think the country
nocds a change and we can't be worso off for
..0 ln.!rilutratinn
any cnnniw ui uiu"
Conprossman Jones of Texas says Grant
and Tiltlon will be the naminecs of thoir re-
spective parties and the disaffected from
both will unite ou Wright the Greenback
nominoe. And let mo tell you thoy might do
worse a great deal than have Mr.
Wright of Pennsylvania. He is a good
Democrat if he has taken a now departure.
I muit hope howover that the convention
will do better than to foist so unpopular a
man as Tilden upwn the party.
The prospects are that Edmund J Davis of
Texas will bo the Republican nominee for
Vice-President in which case two of the
three candidates for that otlieo will bo from
Texas. Who can toll? ...
The Cb'cano convention istho absorbing
topic of the hour. Nobody talks of anything
else: even the boat race is forgotten.
Apnropos of which I will say that Kiley
did his best in the last race
Hut it was more play to llanlan to beat him.
I had a seat near three greatly excited
French Canadians who seemed to be on
springs. Tlioy bounded up and down first
on thair heels and then on their toes and
when Halan camo toward the stand about
even with Riley (at the start) tho throe men
moved their arms like windmills and shrieked
out "Hurrah Uanlan ! Go it Uanlan I Can-
ada forever!" in the funniest broken English
I ever heard. UaHlan heard it and making
one of his long poworful strokes be sont bis
shell scudding past the stand leaving Riley
way behind whoroat the yells of my neigh-
bors and their bouncings and gyrations be-
came too amusing to resist and I bad to
laugh. Rut tbev forgave me because 1
waved my handkorchief to their tavor-
ite and told a friend near
by that ho was tho finest
oarsman I had ever scon in Europo or Amer-ica-which
was saying very little for I never
saw any protcssionol rower m my lifo till I
saw Uanlan but the Canadians didn't know
that.
The morning's dispatches show a strong
Blaine gain at Chicago. I do not think
he will be nominatod although he is the most
popular of the three who are candidates for
nomination that is most popular with the
people of tho) Statos wh'ch must el ct the
Republican if he is olectcd. But it is a curi-
ous foa'.uro of this canvass that the htates
that nominate do not elect and this defeats
the popular will asetl'ectually as a coup d ctat
over did the Fr.mch aristocracy. I rathor
think Mr. Sherman will be the Chicago nom-
inoe. Ho has worked silently but incessantly
and he bas the government patronago to
keep him. .
Judge P.ivis of Bryan was in astiing-
ton two weeks ago on his way to Virginia to
take his children to somo relatives there. He
then believed himself a widower and his
children orphans. Th- Texas colony has
been thrown into ereat excitoment by the
recent n i concerning the re-appearance of
Mrs. Davis. ' I really cannot sc however
why guilt should be fastened upon her eo
hastily. Them seems t3 be no proof that
she eloped with any one. Perhaps she was
tired of overythinir and everybody about her
and wanted to go away and if she chose to
lot herself be accounted doad and made her
escape In the original and unique mannorshe
did I see no harm in it except in causing un-
necessary gr'ef and anxiety to her family.
But would that grief have been any less had
she written a letter in the orthodox fashion
and left it blotted with tears on her toilet
table? The true cause of most women s
wickednes Is mental idleness. "Women's
work" as household drudgery is commonly
cllod is a wearing and a boring employment
such as no man would endure for a month but
even this is b-tter for the soul than no work
at all. Stagnation breeds unwhole-
somencss of mind and body and any
naturally active mind having no real occu-
pation runs to desperation as surely as a
stagnant atmosphere brings on a storm. So
I brR you dear sisters deal gently with this
woman of whom you know no real harm
and don't judge her.

Suffrage convention will get their plank in-
sorted in tho C'sicngo platform. I know
some of tho delecatcs and am sure nothing
but the most sincere onviution that they
. were doing a solemn imperative duty could
have taken them from tho swoot privacy of
tuoir homes where they are beloved and
honored wives and mothers Into tbu blare
and dissonance and publicity of a convntion.
This I am as sure of as that I live. I do not
think they aro taking the right steps toward
it but I do know that thair gal Is lofty and
pure and noble and while 1 ditlor tromthem
in method I heartily sympathize with their
object To them woman's suffrage is a means
not an and a dernier tusort in tneir dire ex-
tremity. Adois A. H. Moul.
