Mrs Liuuler liuide her second up
peaniuee lust night Ihn play chosen
Minx Hhiiksiiuiii'i'H "Antony mid
Clenpiilrii" n large house having iw
seiultled to en Joy her maguilleeiit net
lug. As"('li-iiialrn" Mrs. I.undergiive
a very reniurkable and brilliant 'vl
deuce of her versatility The ipialllUs
which urn required to make it great
''KlUabeth" uro hardly called Into
requisition In "Cleopatra." The llrst
Is better suited to the development of
Mrs. Lander's strongest drainallu
points while the hitter shows us llie
ravishing subtleness of u young and
lovely queen who Is all passion u crea-
ture mado up of heart tierce tender-
ness and seinl-barbarlc sensuousueHH.
Her "Cleopatra" Is warm und buoy-
ant with all thti elements of Oriental-
liim-ii whirlwind of loving beauty ut
one time und us deadly us the I'pas
tree at another In her powers of fasci
nation. She practices all of tho wiles
blandishment and coquetries of her
sex and piques and soothes by turns.
A very tyrant to "Antony" one mo-
ment nntl u slave the next. It Is sel-
dom tho wonderful uruiory of a wo
man's weapons for destroy lug or bless-
ing men maddening or ennobling
them Is seen. After seeing her you
wonder no longer that men ore the
minuets thev uro In the hands of n
woman bent upon reigning or ruining.
Mrs. Lander makes " lleopalia" it
strunge passionate creature of words
who has in them all but one thought
and that love untrammelcd supreme.
Tho very heart of Egypt's quaen Is
laid .tuivo in all of its terrible capacity
for suffering mid bliss love Jealousy
and constancy. Her relations with
"Cic.ar" urea mere episode her whole
life and being is bound up iu "Antony
who Is all in all. From the moment
his misfortunes begin she is a woman
in devotion ami loyalty. Her caprl
clousncss and waywardness vanish
and the spoilt petted queen is changed
into the woman who loves. The char
acter Is purillud of all of tho dross of
sensuality aud her great spirit rises to
the highest capacity of womanly loy-
alty. It has been niuo i the fashion to
picture Cleopatra as a mere imperial
wanton practising her arts aud wiles
to entrap "Antony." Mrs. Lauder very
properly cleanses the part of this inti-
mation by giving us llrst "Cleopatra's"
woudrous power of pleasing then
her whimsical anil bewildering coquet
ry and last the woman as she is when
her heart becomes touched indeed.
Then it Is that all lightness vanishes
aud she stands revealed iu all of her
strength of devotion. There is no wa-
vering no experimenting no probing
of "Antony's" heart Just to try her
power.
No comparison can properly be
drawn betweeu Mrs. Lander's Eliza-
beth and her Cleopatra. They are both
great aud original conceptions of. dia
metrically opposite characters each
drawn with a master hand and with
that breath of lire gculus aloue can
b.-eulhe iuto them animating them.
Air. Taylor appeared as "Antony"
and the rest of the troupe appeared In
fie cast. The costumes were distin
guished by the same richness aud ap-
propriateness as those of "Elizabeth"
and it is to be regretted that the late-
ness of the hour ami our limited space
will not permit of an extended notice
of the male characters ami particularly
Mr. Lawlor's manner of describing as
"Domltus EnobarbiiH" the barge and
voyage of " Cleopatra."
The visit of Mrs. Lander and her ad-
mirable troupe bos been a welcome
Intellectual aud dramatic treat aud
it is to be hoped that when next she
comes there will be proper theatrical
accommodations to receive iter and
audiences who are not nfrul.l to ap-
plaud or who depress artists by un
unintentional coldness of reception
when in fact they are amazed and de-
lighted. "Henrll.

The Alatiama committee found one
colored witness who swore thut he had
been intimiduted. Ho had been
threatened several times. He wits
afraid to go to the polls but did go and
cast his vote though he was much
alarmed for his safety. When he had
testilied at some length to this ellect
Congressman Luttrell asked him how
often he had voted. He said he. had
"been and voted two or three times."
"And how old are you?" asked Mr.
Luttrell. "I'm twenty years old" re-
plieil the intimidated witness. He
looked to be about nineteen but he
hud been intimidated.
