Steel bands bring music, choreography to life
Holly Harvey
Senior Staff Writer
Some bands just play their
music.
UNT Steel Bands play percus-
sion instruments constructed
out of 55 -gallon oil drums while
performing their own elaborate
choreography.
The Two O' Clock and Eight
O' Clock steel bands have 25
students in each respective
percussion band. They gener-
ally play traditional Caribbean
music from Trinidad and Tobago,
where steel bands started, said
graduate student David I la!I.
director of the Two O'clock steel
band.
"With percussion, you play
any instrument you can strike,"
Hall said. "But these constructed
drums are laid out differently.
They're unique."
The drums vary in size, with
the larger drums emitting
lower tones and the smaller
ones sounding higher, said
Two O'clock steel band member
Kaylie Hardeman, a perfor-
mance senior who plays the
lead steel drum, also known
as a pan.
She said students rehearse
twice a week as a group and
have a few individual section
practices.
"We have a really relaxed
environment," Hardeman said.
"Everyonelooks forward to going
to rehearsals."
Aside from the unusual
instruments, the UNT steel
bands stand apart from other
groups because of the student-
created choreography that
accompanies performances,
Hardeman said.
Choreography includes
swaying, jumping and anything
else band members come up
with.
The band members usually
get together the night before a
performance and start tossing
ideas back and forth, Hardeman
said.
"Everyone really gets into
the performing," she said. "And
people in the crowd can tell that
you're having a lot of fun."
The choreography is primarily
a way for students to enjoy them-
selves but also augments the
music and evokes an audience
response, Hall said.
"The audiences really respond
to the choreography and they
like it," he said.
Two O'Clock steel band
member Matt Young, a jazz
studies sophomore, said connec-
tions between musicians are
important.
"It really feels good to play in
the same room with alotoflike-
minded people," Young said.
"I'm mainly a drum set player,
and it feels good to connect with
other drummers."
In 1982, UNT became one
of the first universities in the
country to start a steel band
program, according to the
College of Music's website.
Although they primarily play
traditional Caribbean music,
Young said the bands do some
pop, rock and last fall even played
"Every Little Thing She Does is
Magic" by The Police. The bands
usually perform about three or
four times a semester.
"We play a lot of music origi-
nating from Trinidad, but with
these instruments, you can really

play anything," Hall said.
