"CONGRATULATIONS" Captain John Garlinger

Archives are valuable
They came to Texas on
horseback in lumbering
covered wagons by ship or
even on foot. And when they
arrived their names were
added to tax rolls census
enumerations and voter lists.
Some signed documents such
as the Texas Declaration of
Independence and others ran
for offices that ranged from
constable to governor.
And now their descendants
set out in search of their own
personal history following
the trail that their parents
and grandparents left in the
documents they signed. For
anyone whose family came
through Texas the Texas
State Library's Archives
Division is a vital stop.
When Governor Dolph
Briscoe visited the Library
recently he found an an
cestor's signature just inside
the door. Andrew Briscoe sig
ned the Texas Declaration of
Independence that has been
on permanent display at the
Library for a decade.
The search is a fascinating
one. The trek may turn into a
geography lesson as wagon
roads that crossed rivers on
shallow fords instead of
bridges are followed. And it
may turn to political science
as the formation of counties
is examined.
Some of the largest bodies
in a
genealogists are records of
the Texas Rangers ap
plications for Confederate
pensions by veterans and
their widows and the
microfilm copies of United
States Census reports.
In accordance with its
disseminating Texas history
the State Library has over
the years accumulated an im
pressive collection of books
A brand new computer has been installed in
our service area
It'll relay messages via sensors and probes
that have been built into critical areas of some 71
and all new VW
Vital service points will be checked And the
results will be printed in plain English telling you
410 Highway 440 South
and other published materials
about Texas. Thus a resear
cher can not only find out
that he is descended from a
member of the Texas
Rangers but also something
about the Rangers as perhaps
written by one of the Rangers
himself or by a historian.
The application for Con
federate pensions have long
been an important source of
information about both
veterans and their widows.
Finding a name and the pen
sion number that goes with
it however used to require
scanning dozens of pages.
Now convenient computer
printouts make it possible for
a researcher to use the list
as easily as a telephone book.
The name is located and the
original pension application is
requested by number.
The light is subdued in the
microfilm reading room. Like
the computer printouts the
a in
represent the use of modern
technology in the study of
history. The original census
records are in the National
Arechievs in Washington but
censuses from 1970 to 1880 for
all states of the United
States are available on
microfilm at the Texas State
Library.
