The 1st Cav. Div. has long
been known by its peers as
a unit of distinction. A motor
cycle platoon the idea of
triple capability warfare an
old fashion mounted horse-
cavalry platoon and distinc
tive head gear for individual
units are just a few of the
trends initiated by the First
Team.
In May of 1972 another
new idea took shape and now
1st Cav. artillerymen are the
first to use something other
than a standard field tent for
battery fire direction centers
(FDC).
Lt. Col. W lliam H.
Schneider present comman
der of the First Teams 1st
Bn. 77th Field Artillery was
the division G-4 when the
suggestion of using civilian
pop up trailers for field exer-
cises came to light.
MASSTER headquarters
reviewed the proposal
thought it was worth looking
into and purchased three of
the civilian type trailers for
field use.
After a period of testing
division headquarters found
the trailers inadequate for
their needs as a jump CP
and were about to send them
out to pasture when Lt. Col.
Schneider who had since
taken command of the
Falcons rescued them in
Nov. of 1972. His idea was to
use the trailers to house the
airmobile artillery battery
fire direction centers.
The trailers were welcomed
to the battalion with a fresh
coat of OD green paint
minor modifications and
christened with a large sub
dued Cav. patch. Next the
radio mounts were per
manently fastened to the
trailers and the canvas cover
was waterproofed to give ad
ded protection against the
elements.
The three trailers obtained
from division headquarters
were distributed to each of

the 105 mm airmobile bat
teries and each tried his hand
at finding the best
arrangement for fire direc
tion operations. According to
Schneider the FDC team's
initial impression of the
trailers was very satisfac
tory. "The men were more
than willing to try something
different" he added "ex-
pecially when it would reduce
the set up time a: offer a
more compact an- comfor
table arrangement."
Now with one year of ex
perience and numerous field
training exercises behind it
the concept of using the pop
up trailers seems to be as
successful as anticipated. "Of
course they are not the per
fect solution" Schneider
commented "but the advan
tages greatly outweigh its
shortcomings and we are
very glad to have them."
Compactness quick and
easy set up and ease of
movement to different
locations are the main advan
tages the trailers offer. "We
can air lift the FDC trailers
in CH-47 Chinooks to and
from any location and have
them set up and in operating
condition much faster than

with the old method" he con
tinued. "The trailers house
.all the necessary radio and
wire equipment FADAC
charts and other fire direc
tion material eseential to the
operation. When it moves to
a specific location all we
have to do is raise the top
connect the radio power
cables put the five-man FDC
teams to work and we're
ready to go. We also carry
our camoflage net on top of
the trailer so it's just a mat
ter of pulling it down over
the trailer and we are com
pletely hidden."
"Of course we've found a
few bugs that need to be
worked out too. After taking
them on exercises in the
desert at Ft. Bliss and the
swamps at Ft. Polk we
realized that the trailers
lack sturdiness. A heavier
and stronger frame and body
siding is needed to support
this type of vehicle. More
ground clearance is also
needed he added. This could
be obtained by the use of
larger tires and a better
suspension system to aid in
Copperas

crossing over ruts rocks and
tree stumps. One minor over
sight that the troops encoun
ter with the civilian type
trailers is the lack of an
organizational maintenance
manual. We need a manual
and an assortment of parts to
keep the vehicles working in
1
top condition.
"But as a battalion we are
more than satisfied with the
results of our experiment and
feel that the use of pop up
trailers for fire direction cen
ter operations definitely has
future use in today's modern
army."
We wish you great joy this Christmastide...may
love and peace abide with you and yours all
