FACELIFTED Taking on a new look following a massive
rebuilding project the Ft. Hood Community Center offers much in
Obvious during the maneuvers of the 2nd Armd.
Div. Test Six was the effective use of camouflage.
Less obvious is the unintended use of camouflage
over GI benefits and programs designed to aid the
soldier. Doubtless most servicemen and women are
aware that AER CHAMPUS and USAFI are ab
breviations of programs affecting their lives. But
beyond that realization most know very little about
what the abbreviations mean. Along with this
unawareness is a lack of knowledge concerning the
uses of the Community Center and the Open Door
Policy.
This article on the Community Center is the first in
a series of articles designed to acquaint servicemen
and women and their dependents with the programs
and benefits they can use during their service
'time.
The Community Center from the outside looks like
a Gym and at one time it was. For several years the
Community Center used the gym when it still looked
like a gym with its floor still remembering the games
once played there.
Several years ago the center wes refurbished and
neat attractive offices were introduced to the
building. Today the center includes several offices to
aid Ft. Hood personnel and their dependents. Most
well known are housing and billeting and vehicle
registration. This article will review not only these
but all services at the center.
As you enter the center the information desk stands
off to your left. The "We work friendly" people at
this desk can answer many questions and direct you

plaints or questions about housing or billets can be
directed to this office.
The next office is concerned with memberships in
several different clubs. Memberships for the Of

from the Community Center.

used for all questions relating to voting.

can be done in the main office can be done in the

If you have recently arrived or are going to depart
from this area the Transportation Office can answer
questions about household goods as well as make ap
pointments to have the goods delivered or picked up.
Vehicle Registration is operated by the Provost
Marshall. All vehicles used here on post should be
registered at this office.
The Army Community Service maintains a loan
closet directly to the right of the main entrance. A
branch of the post office is located to the left of the
entrance.
The center shows an 18-20 minute film "Welcome to
Ft. Hood Have A Nice Day" which introduces
Ft. Hood and the surrounding communities. Plans are
in the making to move the Airline Ticket Office and
the Western Union into the center.
During the early months of the year income tax
assistance is provided and during February and
March the center sells Texas State License Plates.
Every Tuesday a representative of the Veteran's Ad
ministration also comes to explain VA and Texas
State Benefits.
The best way to describe the Community Center is
a group of the "We Work Friendly" people working
together to help you all at one place at one time.
