Warriors are tough
If you thought weekend-
warriors weren't tough just
ask the 169th.
During their two-week sum
mer training at Ft. Hood the
694th Main. Bn. challenged
the officers of the 169th Main.
Bn. 13th Spt. Bde. to a frien
dly game of softball. The
scene of the mightly out-lash
was Lake Belton and the San
Antonio reservists were vic
tors to the spoils of triumph.
Okalhoma University will
feature a brother act this fall
during the gridiron season.
The. Sooners have three
brothers on the team. The
trio| of brothers are all
linemen on the defense. They
are Leroy Lusious and
Dewey Selmon.

At the bottom of the third
inning the score was six runs
for the visitors and two for
the home team. Our boys
were confident of catching up
until mighty J. Mont-
mayor of the 694th came to
bat. The silver-barred
lieutenant hit a mighty gran
dstand-slammer beyond the
trees then he and two other
teammates saundered home.
Never say the regular
Army boys didn't try. The
169th managed to muster two
more runs before deciding
twas better to settle down
to serious picnicking then
playing or rather running af
ter balls.
Thus after six complete in
nings the score was: Visitors
(15) and the Home team (4).
I wonder if strength does'
lie in the length of one's
hair? Only Samson will really
know.

It looks as if cattle egrets
are here to stay. In less than
20 years since the first im
mature bird was seen on
Mustand Island the egrets
have thrived. They are now a
common sight following cat
tle herds as the animals
graze waiting for alarmed
insects to be routed so that
they may feed.
Cattle egrets have become
so numerous that now an
egret rookery on one's
property can be quite a
liability.
As with most other birds it
is illegal to kill egrets or
disturb their nests. One
trailer park near a rookery is
losing bookings because
grackles which associates
closely with the egret
rookeries disturb customers.
A hunting club downwind
from an island rookery is a
victim of deafening noise.
The stench from the drop
pings and the uric acid on the
tree leaves is overpowering
and when the wind is blowing
in the club's direction the
club is uninhabitable.
The only hope for these
persons is to drive the birds
elsewhere to nest say Texas
Parks and Wildlife Depart
ment officials.
According to officials
timing is critical in moving
the birds. When the first
egrets move in during the
spring nosiemakers such as
sirens and carbide cannons
should be in place to drive
"x v*~i* v*?r??
Egrets increasing fast
them away. Noise should be
made around sunup and just
after sunset to discourage
nesting.
Thinning of trees could also
discourage the birds.
But officials say once the
birds are established in a
rookery for the year nothing
Sports
can legally be done to move
the birds.
"The problem" says John
Smith the department's non-
game biologist "is not get
ting rid of he birds. It is con
trolling the location of their
rookeries."
Although they are a
nuisance to some persons the
birds are actually quite
valuable to have around
because of their diet of

which 80 per cent consists of
insects.
Farmers and ranchers
report that once egrets move
into their fields with their
cattle insect problems drop
drastically.
Egrets are not native to the
United States. They came
from Africa by way of South
America. It is theorized that
the first egrets were started
west by a strong storm which
blew them out to sea and
they followed the prevailing
winds to the next landfall
somewhere in South America.
From South America they
went on to Florida where
they were first spotted
around 1940.
Since that time they have
expanded their range to most
of the United States and
some of Canada.
So far biologists have not
been able to determine if the
cattle egret has had any
disruptive influence on native
species.
