Displaying the comeback clutch style which has
become so typical of Ft. Hood teams the Tanker
tennis team rallied last Friday to win the Fourth
U.S. Army Tennis Tournament which was held at
Ft. Bliss.
Trailing Ft. Sill going into the final day of
the three-day meet the Tankers stormed back behind
John Collins and Charlie Jurva to take a must men's
open doubles victory in a head-to-head confrontation
with Sill's Paul Ellerback and Dick Johnston.
Friday was the deciding point and Floyd
Hamilton who played number three man on the
Hood tourney team said of the Jurva-Collins effort
"they hed to win and did. We came from behind
and won it as a team."
The team Hood sent to Ft. Bliss for the tourna
ment not an overpowering one but it was fast and
well-conditioned. The combination of the two paid
off as the Tankers endured the longest matches of
the tournament to emerge as the champions.
Collins and Jurva were the number one and
two men Hamilton the three man and Dick LeCompte
played number four. Hamilton and LeCompte made
up the number two doubles team. Fred Quinn and
Clint Wright made up a formidable Tanker seniors
contingent and Linda Beckham and Patsy Williams
were the Hood women representatives.
Quinn made it as far as the senior's semi-finals
in singles action before being eliminated and the
Wright-Quinn doubles team was eliminated only in
the finals of the senior's doubles play.
Misses Williams and Beckham qualified for the
women's doubles championship match but were
eliminated there 6-0 6-1 by Mary Herman and
Siniva Tuuau of William Beaumont General Hospital.

SPRINGFIELD
Palomino Still Punching
In International Tryouts
Carlos Palomino the talented gritty Ft. Hood
boxer has been asked to remain with the All-Army
boxing team for further training in preparation for
international competition.
The international competition in this case is
this summer's Pan American Games and the 1972
Olympic Games which are to be held in Munich
Germany. Palomino was one of only three boxers
from the All-Army team to be selected for the in
ternational competition.
The hard-working modest Palomino surprised
many Army boxing veterans first with his victory
in the Fourth Army Championships at Ft. Polk in
January. Palomino pounded three-time All-Army
champion Ed Phillips into oblivion in winning the
156-pound title. Palomino's win led Hood to its 13th
straight Fourth Army championship.
From there Palomino was invited to try out
for the All-Army team at Ft. Carson Colo. He
dropped 17 pounds down to the 139-pound weight
class and decisioned Ft. Bragg's Joe Aproda in the
finals to win a place on the All-Army team.
He lost in the finals of the Interservice matches
at Mare Island Calif. to the Air Force' Juan Ruiz
and must still defeat a number of challengers to
win a spot on the Pan American and Olympic teams
but 1971 has been a successful year for Palomino
and the little Hood puncher is hoping the string
of successes continues.
