Riding through the impossible
doing what a resident rancher
said was impossible five Ft.
Hood servicemen arrived re
cently at a ranch in Mexico after
bouncing over 300 miles on Hon
da motorcycles. The rancher
there had said his area "could
not be reached by motorcycle"
but the five men proved h?m
wrong.
Four of the hard-riding
cyclists are from the 13th Spt.
Bde. They are Capt. Jimmy
Smith Hq. & Hq. Co. 13th Spt.
Bde Capt. John Inman 647th
Maint. Co. 169th Maint. Bn
CW3 Duncan 528th Trans. Co.
169th Maint. Bn. and Spec.
Dan Dooley 565th RPC 553rd
S&S Bn. The other cyclist is
Sfc. Robert* from the 1st Cav
Spt. Cmd.
The men started the trip from
Big Bend National Park with
their first days objective being
the village of Benavides in the
state of Chihuahua Mexico. The
group was only able to travel
an average of ten miles an hour
be a us he ad
deteriorated into trails.
But ihe village was reached
after a day of riding and the
men prepared for the next day's
scrambling with the ranch as
the Objective.
Unfortunately because there
were no road signs.. and often
no roads after a hard day of
pounding through washouts dust
and potholes the cyclists found
they had been traveling in the
wrong direction and had to start
over again.
The only map they had was
an aeronautical Chart which was
quite useless for their purposes.
The next day they attacked
the objective from a new direc
tion this time using narrow
mining roads through a high
desert and mountanous region.
They passed through a
number of villages on the way
always getting a welcome recep
tion from the curious townspeo

Canny Cyclists Can
Cherish Comeback
The roads continued to get
tougher causing a good deal
of wear on the cycles. Since
each rider carried at least
50 pound load of food water
clothing and camping gear
before the trip was through the
tubing that supported the equip
ment on each rear fender broke
off.
The men carried tools and
pa re pa no a
mechanical difficulty was ex
perienced on the trip although
the high altitudes had an effect
on the fuel mixture and forced
the men to keep their engines
revved-up when riding in the
mountains.
The second attempt at
reaching the ranch proved suc
cessful as the tired riders
reached the McKellar ranch that
night to enjoy the hospitality
of the once skeptical rancher.
McKeller gains access to his
ranch in a much easier fashion
than the cyclists. He has an
airplane which flies him to the
nearest town in 45 minutes.
While the men were at the
ranch a heavy rain fell and
on the advice of the rancher
they decided to return by the
way they came because the
combination of mud trails and
heavy loads could easily prove
disastrous had they elected to
take- the 'low road.''
The ride home proved no
easier than the trip to the ranch
especially when the group at
tempting to'ford the Rio Grande.
The water had risen higher than
the bikes but after a tense two
hours they forded the bikes safe
ly to the other side.
Tired sunburned but happy
the cyclists returned to Ft. Hood
eight days after they had left.
The trip was something they'll
always remember" and Capt.
Smith and Mr. Robert are
already planning another trip
The other three men will be
leaving Ft. Hood soon taking
with them the memory of their
impossible" trip.

.. How can we do it? Easy.
We give our trade-ins the 16-point inspection. And
fix whatever needed fixing before we put them obt on
the lot.
Which is where these are right now.
