One of the last big ex
cursions planned for the mem
bers of Great Britain's Col
dstream Guard and Royal
Hussars was scheduled last
Oct. 30 when the foreign
troops traveled to Austin and
San Antonio. A tightly schedul
ed day provided them the op
portunity to see and tour the
state oapitol the Alamo and
other places of interest in the
cities.
Div. mounted band under the

Russell made two passes in
front of the bleachers and
reviewing stand.
Following a selection of tunes
by the band
which provided
music throughout the hour and

The soldiers were greeted
at the state oapitol by Martin
Dies Jr. Texas secretary of
state. Gov. Preston Smith
who had originally planned to
greet the troops was unable
to be present due to the then
mand sergeant majjor board
ed a jeep to inspect the as
sembled Old Ironsides soldiers.
The entire Old Ironsides colors
then assembled in front of the
reviewing stand where batons
were presented to command

division.
"It is a distinct honor and
privilege to stand with Old
Ironsides and pay respect to the
command sergeants major of
the 1st Armd. Div." Desobry
told the crowd. "These fine
upcoming election.
"We are honored and pleas
ed to have you with us"
said Dies. "We are more than
an xi us to
courtesy to you that we can."
The capitol building
completed in 1888 is cur
rently being remodeled but
the noise from the con
struction work took nothing
away from the effectiveness
of the tour.

floors of the rotunda gives the

ferent look and the British
troops found this an ideal
place for picture-taking.

Americans have dedicated their
entire adult lives to America
and the freedom for which it
stands. And these men could
haveno greater mission in life.
"These batons are a token of
pride and respect for these
Americans" Desobry continued
as he presented Orr a cavalry
swagger stick that was carried
by Gen. George S. Patton in
North Africa during WWII.
Desobry upon departing for
a tour of duty in Vietnam
received the stick from his
father-in-law Lt. Gen. Geoffrey
Keyes. Patton had presented the
stock to Keyes in Germany dur
ing WWII.
The swagger stick will remain
in the division and will be pass
ed on from one division com
mand sergeant major to another
as their tours of duty with Old
Ironsides end.

Gray Army Airfield for two
days of training Tuesday and
Wednesday.
Several units from the 1st
and 2nd Armd. Divs. and the
13th Spt. Bde. spent the two
days loading and unloading the
mammoth bird in a training
exercise that allowed each
division 13 hours training time

2nd and 3rd Bdes. DivAr
ty Discom 3rd Sqdn. 1st
Cav. and the 16th Engr. Bn.
each provided one officer and
one NCO from each company
battery or troop and two load
teams from each battalion
comprised of one NCO and
three enlisted men per team
for its training.
At 9 a.m. the 1st Bde. and
1st Bn. 6th Arty. were first
to receive instruction from
the loadmasters two Air
Force enlisted men on the
procedures for loading the
aircraft. Throughout the day
the various commands loaded
and then unloaded tanks
howitzers and other mobile
equipment.

residence.
The Guards' drill ceremony

The largest number of
vehicles Old Ironsides loaded
at one time was put aboard
by the men from Discom who
leaded two 12-ton trailers two
6-ton vans a 5-ton tractor
a 2^-ton truck a 1%-ton
trailer a 214-ton shop van and
a %-ton trailer.

All three 2nd AD brigades

Each unit provided four sax-
man loading teams and at
least one M60 tank. The 1st

vehicle used plus two five-
quarter ton trucks and an
M109 howitzer.

loading the huge aircraft as
the exercise got underway at
10 p.m. Nov. 3.
The 1st Bde. finished its por
tion of the training at 2:20
a.m. on Nov. 4 and 2nd Lt.

soldiers roamed through the
museum filled with relics of
old Texas.

them to Ft. Sam Houston in

It was noted during the
presentation ceremony that a
special division order had been
published authorizing only the
command sergeants major to
carry the batons during their
tours with Old Ironsides.

Standing six stories or 65
feet tall the C5A Galaxy is
248 feet long and has a wing
span of 223 feet. It weighs
almost 800000 pounds fully
loaded and is capable of flying
that load to any po'nt in
the world at speeds of over
500 miles per hour.

statute miles and it can carry

will be included in the band's
accompaniment. "Duke of

York" "Figaro" "The Col
dstream Guards" and "The
Grenadier Guards" all will
add authenticity to the British
parade which will feature in
tricate drill formations and ri
fle maneuvers.

In honor of the present home
of Old Ironsides the band paid
to a
displayed precise jeep
maneuvers by forming the let
ters "F.H." And for the first
time at Ft. Hood the band
performed the "Hood Texas
Brigade March" which has been
adopted by the Hood Texas
Brigade Association. Russell ar
ranged the march for the
association at the request of Lt.
Gen. Beverley E. Powell III
Corps and Ft. Hood commander.
which with the Black Watch
is currently performing in
Texas.
Under the program which
sent the Coldstream Guard to
Ft. Hood elements of Hell
On Wheels travelled to
England to train with and
learn aboift the English.
The ex/Jiange period ends
next weekend as the British
troops are scheduled to depart
Nov. 12 and 13. The 7th Bn.
6th Inf. should return to Ft.
Hood that weekend.
SENTINEL SHORTS
HAVE YOU DECIDED to retire from active
service on or before Nov. 30 1972? If you have
you should start planning now for your retirement
by attending the pre-retirement orientation in
Theater 1 from 8 to 11:15 a.m. Nov. 13.
This program will cover the rights and
benefits that accrue to retirees and offer pro
fessional guidance in preparation for a second
career. Guest speakers will be present to represent
the Texas Employment Commission the Social
Security Administration the Veterans' Ad
ministration the Texas Veterans' Affairs Com
mission Central Texas College and Mary Hardin-
Baylor College.
On-post facilities to be represented will be
the Education Center Civilian Personnel Office
Darnall Army Hospital Finance and Accounting
Office and the Post Office. The Department of
Defense's new program Project REFERRAL a
computer job matching system will also be dis
cussed.
Attendance is not limited to those in
dividuals retiring within the next two years as
anyone with over 18 years service is eligible to
attend. Dependents and recent retirees are also
invited to attend.
THE MONTHLY ORIENTATION for newly
arrived families will be conducted at 1 p.m. Tues
day in Theater 1. Attendance by military sponsors
who have or who contemplate having dependents
at this installation or in the immediate vicinity
is mandatory. In addition adult dependents are
asked to attend an orientation as soon as
convenient after arrival at Ft. Hood or vicinity.
