Hell On Wheels Patch
Over Heart Is Unique
For three decades the influ
ence of Gen. George S. Patton
Jr. has been felt by every soldi
er who ever caime in contact
with the 2nd Armd. Div. But
few of them even realize it.
The fatigue uniform of every
Hell on Wheels soldier is unique.
It.'s different from all others
because of one distinguishing
characteristic: the Hell on
Wheels insignia is not worn on
the shoulder. Rather it is worn
over the heart and has been
since Patton took command of
the division in 1940.
During extensive training
exercises prior to the invasion
of North Africa Patton and Col.
Redding Perry designed the
patch which incorporated the
designs of patches worn by the
American Tank Corps in 1918
an S a a
Brigade in 1933.
A man who always demanded
respect and loyalty to the
division from his men the col
orful general decreed that the
patches would be worn on the
left breast a position which
indicated spiritual loyalty and
closeness to the heart.
The division insignia was
designed on a triangular base
which was the ancient heraldic
symbol for a spearhead and
divided into red blue and yellow
artillery infrantry and cavalry
units. Incorporated on the col
orful shield of the tank corps
were three items used by the

put.
In 1898. unit patches were worn
on the caps by enlisted person
nel and over the heart by of
ficers. Although it has not been
verified this part of insignia
history may have bees the spark
that ignited Patton's brainstorm
for all Hell on Wheels personnel
to wear their patches close. to
their heart.
Distinctive insignia worn on
the uniform sleeves did not
appear until the 81st Division
bound for France during World
War I started the "fad" on
its own initiative.
Members of the division
were rebuked for wearing cloth
wildcats on their sleeves when
they arrived in France. Since
the patches however were a
part of the uniform when the
division left the states they
later were accepted. The war
department soon after authoriz
ed unit patches for all units
as large as a division.
Today unit insignia have
become a colorful part of every
soldier's uniform. Indian chiefs
no a am on a
animals have become a simple
way to identify a soldier with
his unit.

It' is interesting to note that
the use of distinctive unit in-

Department of War until 1920
although they first appeared

Civil War commanders needed
a functional way to reassemble
their units which had been scat
tered throughout an area during
combat. They resorted the use
of red white and blue insignia
on the soldiers' hats to denote
the first second and third

Fording? Safety
Has Better Idea
There are 12 low lying road crossings areas
where a road fords a stream or creek on the reserva-.
tion. In most cases tliere is no bridge because most
of the time there is little or no water to pass over.
However when it rains as it has the past few
days the water level at these crossings makes fording
dangerous or maybe impossible.
Post Safety spokesmen say that the crossings
here on post are marked. If the water level is at
the blue marker level vehicles up to and including
a:
-ton truck are not to attempt a fording. If
the water is at the yellow marker level no wheeled
vehicles are permitted to cross the swollen stream.
If the red marker is the only one showing safety
officials stated that no track laying or wheeled
vehicles are to cross the mighty "river."

Initial processing work is
handled by the input-output and

to the key punch van to be

The cards are then sent to the
