The Black Soldier
Most periodicals and history books refer to them
as "soldiers of color coloreds Negroes and blacks
.when they see fit to mention "them" at all.
But the labels don't matter.
What is important is that history reflect and
give due credit to the role the black soldier has played
in the military affairs of the United States.
Throughout history he has distinguished himself
as a fighter and as a man. Beginning with the war
of the Revolution and stretching to the struggle in
Vietnam today the black soldier the Negro soldier
.— has been an integral key to victory.
The heritage of the black soldier extends back
almost three and one half centuries. Obviously one
article cannot attempt to bridge that gap in history
and fill in the triumphs the defeats and frustrations
he has experienced.
So this is but Part I of a series of features on
"The Black Soldier in History." In weeks to come
the articles will be documented with old history and
newer history and the history being made even as
these lines are read.
The black soldier's heritage is indeed rich. As
free men and as slaves blacks participated in the
French and Indian Wars and several thousand served
in the Revolutionary Army throughout the ranks.
Gen. George Washington who at the outset of
the war ordered that Negroes not be utilized publicly
praised the troops after the victory by the new nation
was won.
During the War of 1812 white men and black
men served side-by-side in the defense of New Orleans
and during the Civil War some 178985 black troopers
fought for the Union Army. The soldiers received a
number of resounding public commendations after the
war had ended.
The famous "Buffalo Soldiers" of the 9th and
10 th Cav. compiled envious records of bravery in ac
tions against the Indians and were it not for heroics
by Negro troops during the Spanish-American War
the famous charge up San Juan Hill might never have
been.
World War I saw many of the 404000 black
troops formed into two infantry divisions the 82nd
and 83rd. Their actions caused Gen. John
J.
to comment in June of 1918:
'I cannot commend too highly the spirit shown
among the colored combat troops who exhibit fine
capacity for quick training and eagerness for the most
dangerous work."
The 992965 Negro troops and 7700 officers in
World War II served in more branches of the Army
and in a greater variety of units than ever before.
And during-the Korean War the Army led the
other military branches in the long-overdue integration
of Negro units.
Today with black and white American soldiers
fighting side-by-side in the Republic of Vietnam there
have been many heroes many instances of blacks
saving white lives and whites saving black lives.
This special series will bring the reader up to
that point in time in future articles.
It will show how black soldiers throughout our
history have earned for their brothers a proud heritage
one everyone can be proud of today.

Texas now has an implied

Sounds rough? It should be.
The use of alcohol figures in
almost 50 per cent of traffic

breathalyzer comes in. It cuts
down on the number of drinking
drivers on the road.
The number of persons charg
ed has almost doubled since
the implied consent law and
the use of the breathalyzer went
into effect Sept. 1 1969. And
that's just the begin
ning—because more and more
operators are being trained on
the breathalyzer and the instru
ment is being used by city
police.
In the city of San Antonio
alone DWI charges have in
creased 68 per cent with the
use of the breathalyzer. San
Antonio now has 13 trained
operators for the machine.
Other cities in the state ?re also
conducting a certified breath
test program.
"Driving a motor vehicle on
a highway is a privilege and not
an inherent right" Shanklin
reminds all drivers. "Along with
the privilege goes the
responsibility—that of being a
safe and courteous driver at
all times."
