BOOMING BOOM
TAIPEI Formosa There is
a great building boom in and
around Taipei and property values
are rising steadily.
The reason is a popular belief
that the Communists never will be
able to seize Formosa and that the
Reds will not dare bomb with the
U. S. 7th Fleet guarding it.
Despite the frenzy of building
the housing shortage remains acute
in Taipei.
Letters To The Troops
Early in 1945 when allied troops were at last penetrating deep
into enemy territory the psychological impact of impending victory
confronted our commanders with a most difficult—and dangerous
situation. An almost irresistible feeling that the war was over swept
the ranks of the military. Here was a point at which all our knowl
edge all our experience and enthusiasm was essential to the accom
plishments of long sought objectives. To falter then was to invite
disaster or at least an extension of the fight. Fortunately there was
no letdown. Our commanders rallied their troops pressed their ad
vantage and swept on to final victory.
Today with the announcement of the success of the Salk vac
cine your National Foundation finds itself in a similarly dangerous
position. We have won a great deal and we may hope a decisive
battle. But we have not yet won the war.
In the past year despite the fact that your March of Dimes
gave protection to millions of school children tens of thousands of
newly stricken testify that total protection is not yet a reality. Five-
year-old Tommy Woodward from Baltimore Maryland our 1956
March of Dimes Poster Child is representative of the 70000 victims
of past years victims who look to you for help fearful that in the
enthusiasm over the success of the vaccine they may be forgotten.
In our hands we have a new and potent weapon. With further
research we shall increase the potential of the vaccine. There must
be other weapons too. Weapons of prevention. Weapons of re
habilitation Weapons of professional knowledge. And most im
portant the mighty weapon of your will to see this fight through to
he finish.
Thanks to you we can sense the nearness of that day of ultimate
victory. But you alone with your splendid spirit and experience
can overcome the dangers of the moment. You alone can rally the
nation to press the advantage you have gained over this terrible enemy
that has not yet been eliminated from our midst. (Request of a let
ter to the March of Dimes campaign director published in the 1956
March of Dimes booklet.)
