Gets Cold Shoulder
509th Tank Bn
Old Man Winter
Takes A Beating
SEOUL (ANF)—The Army in
Korea is giving Old Man Winter the
cold shoulder.
Cold injury cases among men
of the Eighth Army so far this
winter are far fewer than during
the corresponding period last year
—with confirmed cases totaling
less than a third as many as in the
same period during the 1951-1952
winter.
In addition to being fewer the
cold injury cases this season also
have been milder.
Last winter 83 per cent of the
cases were severe and required
lengthy hospital treatment. This
year only 5.9 per cent have requir
ed long hospital care.
PROGRAM SUCCESSFUL
The sharp drop in soldier vic
tims of the biting Korean weath
er indicates the sucess of an Army
cold weather training program
that began in August and will con
tinue throughout the winter.
By Sgt. Johnnie Battle
The men in the battalion have
changed the March of Dimes to
the March of Dollars with each
man donating at least a dollar to
the fund.
There is no doubt who gets the
mail in the battalion because when
Sgt. Jones goes to pick up the mail
he only carries his Korean bill
fold.
Everyone is wondering why Sgt
Hayes Catlin rises early now and
according to reports he is not even
trying to make Soldier of the Week.
If any one cares for the answer
ask Sanders who has been promot
ed recently.
"Get well greetings" go to Col
onel Boyer who has been our bat
talion commander for the past
three months.
Returning from the hospital and
now processing for discharge is
PFC Paul Nezart.
Also processing for discharge is
Sgt. Turner who has been with
Able Co. since his return from Ko
rea.
We welcome Cpl. Green back af
ter his graduation frohi clerk typ
ist school at the NCO Academy.

The Army sees that its men get
proper equipment and warm cloth
ing—the best in the world for when
it's cold outside—and soldiers ex
pected to train and fight in cold
weather countries undergo an ex
tensive training program.
Men are instructed carefully by
their leaders in the use of their
equipment and in the care of their
persons when living out of doors
around the clock' in freezing tem
peratures.
INJURIES DROP
Quick identification of cold in
juries and prompt medical atten
tion are responsible for the sharp
drop in the severity of cold injury
cases this season.
Most of the small number of
cold injuries in the Eighth Army
to date* this winter are traceable
to the few individuals who fail to
follow instructions designed to pro
tect them from the rigors of winter
weather.
Reports thus far indicate that
the Army in Korea expects far
fewer cold weather injuries this
seasons.
