THF Renews Commitment for Continued Funding of Preservation
Despite dwindling budgets and the s
state's tough economy, the Texas Histor-
ical Foundation board of directors has
once again honored its commitment to
continue funding as many worthwhile
preservation projects as possible. Six ,
projects won approval from the Founda-
tion board at its most recent meeting in
January.
The Charles Goodnight Historical
Center, Claude, will use THF funds to
match a $200,000 challenge donation
to finish the restoration of the exterior
and interior of the Charles Goodnight
Home, residence of the trailblazing cattle
driver and rancher. This is the third time
that THF has provided financial assis-
tance to this particular project, donating
funds now totalling nearly $135,000.
Historic Wellington Inc., Welling-
ton, will apply funding support to be-
gin restoration efforts of the Ball Service
Station, thought to be one of the few
remaining intact early-day gas stations
in the Panhandle. Once these critical re-
pairs are complete, the second phase of
the project will address restoration of the
historic property for anticipated use as a
visitor's center and offices for the Wel-
lington Chamber of Commerce.
The Williamson Museum, George-
town, will use grant monies for expenses
associated with the 2011 annual Pio-
neer Day at Old Settlers Park in Round
Rock, promoting the area's rich heritage A
through history-related activities, exhib- W t
its, and presentations.
The Documentary Alliance, Bellaire,
will apply a THF grant award to cover
post-production costs for Before the Cur-
tain Rises, a documentary on Texas' In-
terstate Theatre motion picture exhibi-
tion company, which once included a
network of 250 theaters throughout the
state. The Houston-based Documentary Alliance produces
documentary films with a history and preservation focus.
The Former Texas Rangers Foundation, Kerrville, will
use THF funds to purchase 70 memorial crosses for the Texas
Ranger Memorial Cross Program, which identifies and marks
the gravesites of Texas Rangers. To date, FTRF has placed
crosses on the graves of more than 500 Texas Rangers in hon-or of their dedication to the protection
and safety of Texans. This is the second
time that THF has provided financial
' assistance to this specific FTRF pro-
gram.
Grant assistance to the Friends of
*" G rthe Ballinger Indian Statue, Ball-
inger, will help with the cost of casting
and installing a replica of the "Friend,
the Indian" statue, a beloved local icon
that once stood in the city park. The
original "Friend" was one of many cop-
ies created to advertise Wirt-Franklin
gas stations in the 1930s in Texas and
Oklahoma. This project was initiated
" several years ago by a local teacher and
Usher 6th grade students learning about
the history of their hometown.
Tom Doell, businessman from Dal-
las and president of THE said, "To-
day, preservation efforts are seriously
4 threatened by budget shortfalls and
-" dwindling private funding resources.
,..: The Foundation remains committed
to serving as an advocate and financial
= & catalyst for organizations and projects
that preserve the Lone Star State's his-
tory and spirit."

Photos, center: These are some of the his-
toric images that may be included in the
documentary, Before the Curtain Rises, a
project that the Texas Historical Founda-
tion recently helped fund. Top to bottom,
James 0. Cherry, theater manager for In-
terstate, and John Wayne stand next to
the company's tour bus, used to promote
films across Texas, circa 1950s; candy
counter in an Interstate Theatre, circa
1940s; marquee of the Houston Majestic in the early 1960s. All
images are from Interstate Theatres Inc. Photographic Archives.
Editor's Note: The dual spellings of theater and theatre in this
article are intentional because the Interstate Theatre company
used a spelling that differs from the Texas HERITAGE maga-
zine style.
