To F nish the
T here is good news-and some of a not-so-good nature-
to report about the restoration of the Charles Goodnight
Home, a project of the Armstrong County Museum in
Claude, Texas. The structure is one of the earliest large homes in the
state's Panhandle and was the ranch headquarters for the cattleman and
trail driver. Preservationists want to save the home so that it can become
the centerpiece of the Charles Goodnight Historical Center.
Phase I of the restoration is now finished, including work on the
house's foundation, porches, roof, exterior paint, utility infrastruc-
ture-and structural studies by restoration experts and the Texas
Historical Commission. Those working on the project have taken
great care to retain the structure's integrity of location, design, set-
ting, materials, and workmanship.
"Our goal has been to make the home as much like it was when
Charles and Molly Goodnight lived there," said Montie Goodin, of
760 Jim Wright Freeway N. the Armstrong County Museum. Even with this tremendous prog-

though we are about two-thirds done with the house. The primary
work yet to be completed is wallpaper, interior painting, and fur-
nishings." Goodin noted that in addition to seeking more funds, her
Group is also accepting donations of period furniture from the late
1800s to early 1900s.
5 While almost $1.8 million dollars has already been raised towards
L the restoration project, an additional $600,000 is needed to com-

an endowment to support the complex.

in its original state, before the renovations began; completion of Phase 1 of the
restoration has brought the structure closer to the condition that it was in when
the Goodnights occupied the home. $600,000 is still needed to complete the
