Baseball:
Wesleyan baseball started
the season with a victory over
Howard Payne University on
Feb. 8, by a score of 3 to I.
Andy Hughes, starting pitch-
er for Wesleyan, played nine
innings, only threw 86 pitches in
the win, and gave up just two
hits.
As for the rest of the team,
they played great defense in
helping to seal the win. The top
four players, Tyler Kavathiem,
Eric Casillas, Arron Willis and
Jeremy Dutton all got two hits
apiece in the game.
The team traveled to the
University of Mary Hardin-
Baylor on Feb. 9, where luck ran

out as the team lost. Several
pitchers were used for this game;
however, it was not enough to get
the victory.
Nine runs were scored
against Wesleyan and 11 batters
walked.
In the second game of the
double header Wesleyan did
come to play, only to lose a close
game in extra innings, 3-2.
This Saturday, Wesleyan
plays another double header with
Mary Hardin-Baylor at
Sycamore Park Field. Coach
Mike Jeffcoat said he plans to
use a different strategy this time
against Mary Hardin-Baylor with
different results expected.

ment in Piano. Fifteen schools
participated in this tournament of
singles and doubles format.
Best results came from
Wesleyan's number one men's
player, Alan Biel, who reached
the quarterfinals in singles play.
Nick Longhorn also played well
reaching the quarterfinals on the
consulation side of the tourna-
ment.
Both Biel and Longhorn
teamed up to play doubles, and
did reach the finals of doubles
play, but did not win.
On the women's side, Anna
Sacero gave her best effort in a
losing cause.
Benitez is trying to set up a
tennis match for Thursday at
Wesleyan against Dallas Baptist
University.

President Harold G. Jeffcoat
denied the possibility of a foot-
ball team at Wesleyan next year.
While Dr. Jeffcoat did not
deny that talks were taking place
about the possibility, he did say,
"Next year is too soon to expect a
program to get started."
He added that he has asked
interim director of intercollegiate
athletic Terry Waldrop "to bring
together a group of people to
serve as an advisory board to the
university to examine the possi-
ble expansion of our athletic pro-
gram."
He said that football will
only be one of the possible
expansions to the athletic pro-
gram in which they will evaluate.
He also mentioned other
sports such as men's and
women's crew. lacrosse,
women's field hockey and
women's golf as potential addi-
tions to the Wesleyan roster.
