League sponsors program on endangered play lakes
Dr. David Haukos will speak on endangered playa lakes and their significance to
Panhandle ecology n an Earth Day program sponsored by the League of Women
Voters at 7 p.m., Tuesday, April 22. Regional Migratory Management Specialist with
the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Dr. Haukos is also an adjunct professor at Texas
Tech University, Stephen F. Austin State University and Oklahoma State University.
He has worked in the field of wetlands, including playas, since 1988 and co-authored
30 scientific publications on playas and a book on playa flora. Although the Panhandle
has one of the highest concentrations of playas in the world, fewer than half work
today as nature intended, Haukos says. They are important not only to migratory
birds and other wildlife, but also as the primary source of recharge for the Ogallala
Aquifer. The presentation will be held at Amarillo's Southwest Branch Library, 6801
SW 45th. The public is invited to attend. #16

Pampa man convicted of DWI
in County Court Tuesday
A six-member Hemphill County
jury convicted Pampa resident Quen-
tin Dean Booth of driving while intoxi-
cated following one and one-half hours
of deliberation Tuesday afternoon.
Booth, 34, was arrested and
charged with DWI, a class B misde-
meanor, on May 14,2007, at 12:30 a.m.
while traveling through Canadian. He
was represented at the hearing by Qlo
Crum of Amarillo.
Testimony by Hemphill County
Deputy Cody Harper and Deputy Os-
car Ortega, and a video tape of the ar-
rest, were the only evidence offered in
the state's case, which was presented
by County Attorney Ty Sparks. Booth's
mother, Lovella Booth, was the sole
witness on her son's behalf. She testi-
fied that Booth had been in her home
that day, and that he had consumed 4-5
beers before leaving at 9:30 p.m. She
also testified that her son had been
diagnosed with both visual and audio
dyslexia when he was younger, which
may have caused him not to perform
well on the standardized field sobriety
tests.
Jury selection began at 9 a.m. Tues-
day morning, and the evidentiary hear-
ing lasted another two hours. Follow-
ing announcement of the jury's guilty
verdict and a brief punishment phase,
Judge Steve Vandiver deliberated in
chambers before ordering Booth to
pay a $2,000 fine and to serve 60 days
in jail.
Booth was taken directly to Hemp-
hill County Jail following the hearing
to begin his jail sentence. His attorney
issued no notice of appeal.
