Store chain robbed
twice in one week
BY TERRY HAGERTY
Assistant Editor
For the second time in
seven days, Bastrop's All-
Star convenience stores
have been hit by robbers.
On April 28, the All
Star convenience store at
902 Chestnut Street was
robbed. Police are still
searching for the suspects
in that case. On
Wednesday, May 5 at
approximately 11 p.m.,
two men robbed the All-
Star store #8 at 521 Texas
71 W, said Bastrop Police
Department Assistant
Chief Matt Wagner.
Wagner said Ronnie D.
Worthy, 21, of Bastrop
was arrested and charged
with aggravated robbery
after using a shotgun to
rob the Texas 71 store.
Worthy was accompanied
by a second male, not yet
identified, who is still
being sought by police.
"The two subjects
entered the store, Worthy
with a shotgun and forced
the clerk behind the
counter, had her empty
out the registers and fled
the scene," Wagner said.
Although both men
wore hooded clothing,
Worthy was identified
later as one of the sus-
pects, Wagner said.
The pair's images
were caught on surveil-
lance cameras.
After Worthy came to
the police department
Thursday for an inter-
view, he was arrested and
charged, Wagner said.
Wagner said a firearm
was also used at the
Chestnut Street store,
but declined to specify
what type of weapon. The
suspects made off with an
undisclosed amount of
money.
Anyone with informa-
tion about either crime is
encouraged to call the
Bastrop Police
Department at 321-5550
or Bluebonnet Area
Crime Stoppers at the
toll-free phone number of
(866) 930-8477 or the
Hotline at (979) 567-
8477.
When asked if he could
surmise why Bastrop's
All-Star convenience
stores have been the site
of repeated robberies -
there have been several
over the past three years
- and whether the public
should be concerned
about entering those
stores, Wagner replied,
"No comment."
He added, "We have
talked to them on security
issues."

It's a subject that for a
while was a buzzword for
controversy around
Bastrop City Council
chambers - the tree ordi-
nance.
But the city's Parks
Board revisited the sub-
ject as a discussion-only
item during their regular
meeting Thursday night
after the city council
voted to table the original
plan earlier this year
because of strong citizen
opposition.
The original proposed
ordinance, developed by
City Manager Mike Talbot
with input from former
City Planner Stacy Snell
and City Attorney J.C.
Brown, set up stiff finan-
cial penalties for viola-
tions and ran into opposi-
tion from citizens who
said it was invasive of pri-
vate property rights.
At Talbot's recommen-
dation, the council aban-
doned the effort to estab-
lish a first-time tree ordi-
nance, at least for a while.
But Parks Board
members Thursday night
agreed the measure was
worth revisiting, albeit in
a much more pared down
form, In order to qualify
for a prestigious Tree City
USA designation.
Tree City USA is a
tree planting and care
program sponsored by
The National Arbor Day
Foundation for U.S. cities
and towns.
Parks Board chair
Judi Hoover passed
around sample tree ordi-
nances from other munic-
ipalities.
"These are very simple
and basic ordinances and
a way to move forward on
what's important with
tree preservation,"
Hoover said.
Board member Todd
McClanahan, superin-
tendent of Bastrop State
Park, said there are not
many towns in Texas that
are designated as Tree
City USA. He said he
would be willing to go
before the city council to
make the case for earning
the designation and
encourage the need to
revisit a tree ordinance.
"This ordinance could
be as relaxed as we want
it to be," McClanahan
said.
I am a strong leader and I care about our
community. I have shown this with my service
It would be my honor to continue to serve you.
