your schedule, come on a
Wednesday during open
studio and enjoy the new
works. Call me (577-5252)

cial private personal just
for you" opening and I'll be
happy to meet you there

Several of those tal-
ented people happen to be
very generous as well and
have offered to share their
expertise with us.

through April 11. This is
a two-day workshop and
you may pick your two

years and his paper mak-

6408 to sign up or to get
more information on his
classes which will be of-

Wednesdays are
open studio days at the
MNAC.
If you're just wonder-
ing what's going on at
that "cute little arts and
crafts house with the gi-
ant tree growing half-way
out in the street," stop in,
you'll be made very wel-
come. Members and non-
members alike - I prefer
"pre-members" as a mon-
iker -gather to make art,
to watch art being made
and just to hang out.
Come for an hour or for
the duration - 1 to 8 p.m.
Bring a project, bring a
snack, but most impor-
tantly, bring yourself!
The current show at
the LPAA Gallery, "A
Texas State of Mind," will
be in place until the end
of April. Please stop in at
301 Burleson and see it.

nemployment rises
amid seasonal decline
AUSTIN - Em-
ployers in the Austin-
Round Rock MSA*
shed 8,600 jobs in
January, raising the
area's unemployment
rate to 7.6 percent.
The increase in un-
employment was not
unexpected and was
primarily attributable
to staff reductions in
the retail trade sector
following the holiday
shopping season and
normal seasonal vacil-
lation in education and
health services.
"There are jobs be-
ing created in various
industry sectors, but
the overall numbers
are small and competi-
tion for job openings is
very strong," explained
Alan Miller, Workforce
Solutions' executive
director. "We don't an-
ticipate much fluctua-
tion n the unemploy-
ment numbers, either
up or down, for the
next several months."
Over the last 12
months, employment
in the Austin MSA
shrunk by 10,000 jobs,
a -1.3 percent growth
rate.
According to the
Texas Workforce Com-
mission, the unem-
ployment rate for the
Austin-Round Rock
MSA* jumped from 7
percent in December
to 7.6 percent in Janu-
ary. The rate was 6.5
percent one year ago.
The January unem-
ployment rate (not
seasonally adjusted)
for Texas mirrored
Austin's jump, from 8
percent to 8.6 percent,
while the U.S. rate
rose by nearly an en-
tire percentage point,
from 9.7 percent to
10.6 percent
