That, there shall be an election held at the houses of John McHenry
and Philip Demit's Qi the first Monday of January next, to be
presided by such persons as the voters may appoint at which election,
the question shall be upon the annexation of part of Victoria
county to the county of Jackson, and the votes shall be
confined to that portion bf the county six miles west of the Lavacca
river, and should a majority of the voters be in favor of
being. attached to Jackson'county, it shall be so done, if a majority
be in favor of remaining in Victoria, the line shall re77
main as it now is.7

as..against annexation f'the Victoria County territory, for an act
of December 24,. 1844, "more perfectly defining the boundaries of the
county: of.Jackson". detached that.'area from Jackson County. Compensating
the countyfor this loss, this :law extended. the boundaries to the west
and north'to include an area about 35 miles long and 8 miles wide, nfow
in present Matagorda and-Wharton Counties. The boundaries of Jacks n
County were defined as follows:' '
* . . commencing in the channel of the La Baca river, at tie
mouth of Smithers' Creek; thence, following the channel of said
river to La Baca bay; thence, through the channel of said bay
to Matagorda bay; thence, through the channel of said bay to
Trespalacios bay; thence, up the channel of Trespalacios, to
the upper line of the Scott survey; thence, North five degrees
West, to the.intersect.ion of a right line, extending from the
termination, of. the: line between the Jackson and Kincheloe
leagues, on the Colorado4triver, 'to the mouth 'of Smither's creek;
thence, with said; line to the place of beginning.78
A general shift .in, Jackson: C.ounty boundaries attended the creation
of Calh9un,79 Wharton 80 and Lavaca81 Counties, in April 1846. A major

t.he phrase in the law "running thence north twenty-nine 'degreeS"
was regarded as being intended "running thence..'north twenty-nine
imiles','"r'and is so plotted. The name of t he stream which is omitted
from this' law is assumed to be that of the Lavaca River. The lower
line of Gonzales County, alluded to in the law was the early Gonzales
land district line which divided the Gonzales and Victoria
land districts (see Texas General Land Office, Map of Lavaca County).
This line is now part of the southern boundary of De Witt County,
west of Coleto Creek (see Texas General Land Ofcie, ....Map.of. De. Witt ..
County) .
