And then there was one
School board names Steve Murray of Little Elm ISD as lone finalist for superintendent
STEVE EVIURRAY
BY ANDY ROSS
Staff Writer
It was a little over three
months ago when leaders
of the Bastrop Independent
School District undertook
the process of searching for a
new superintendent to lead
the district forward in 2010
and take over the reins from
Interim Superintendent
Roderick Emanuel.
That search likely came
to an end earlier this week.
On Monday, during a
closed-door session of the
BISD Board of Trustees, a
unanimous vote was made
to name Steve Murray - cur-
rent superintendent of Little
Elm ISD near Dallas-Fort
Worth - as the lone finalist
for the position.
"I am delighted with our
selection of Steve Murray,"
Bastrop ISD Board Presi-
dent John Eaton said in a
statement issued following
Monday night's vote.
Eaton went on to praise
the record of leadership that
Murray has demonstrat-
ed over his years working

HUNGER
] iastrop and
Orr answer
challenge
BY ANDY ROSS
Staff Writer
When Texas Agricul-
ture Commissioner Todd
Staples picked up a re-
port released this past
May from the non-profit
hunger charity Feeding
America, he did not like
what he saw.
Scanning the latest
statistics on hunger is-
sues around the U.S., Sta-
ples learned to his dismay
that the Lone Star State
led the nation in food
insecure children under
18 - or children who are
unable to consistently ac-
cess adequate amounts of
nutritious food necessary
for a healthy life.
As a result of the eye-
opening data, shortly af-
terwards Staples issued
the 2009 Mayors Chal-
lenge, a competition en-
couraging mayors across
Texas to increase the
number of children in
their communities partici-
pating in the TDA's Sum-
mer Nutrition Programs.
It seems the city of
Bastrop and Mayor Ter-
ry Orr stepped up to the
challenge in a big way.
On Monday, Sta-
ples came to Bastrop
City Hall where he an-
nounced that among the
cities who participated
in the challenge, Bastrop
served the highest per-
centage of children who
are eligible for free and

BY CYNDI WRIGHT

This Saturday, among
all the Bastrop Christ-
mas happenings, people
can also welcome a new,
nternational thrift store
to the Bastrop area.
Goodwill Industries
will have a ribbon cut-
ting at their new location
at Loop 150 and Hwy 71
at 8:45 a.m.
Included in the day's
events will be Santa
Claus for the children
from 9 to 11 a.m., holi-
day card making, special
guests from Univision ra-
dio, gifts to the first 100
customers beginning at
8 a.m., celebrity guests
and more.
"We are very excited
about joining the Bastrop
community," said Su-
zanha Pena, marketing
director for Goodwill's
central Texas division.
But not everyone is
entirely sure this is a
welcome Christmas pres-
ent to the community.
"It might hurt our
business," said Sherry
Murphy, executive direc-
tor of the Bastrop County
Family Crisis Center.
The center operates
the well-known thrift
store, Bits & Pieces.
Murphy says the
thrift store supported 13
percent of the center's

Corporation will soon
have a new general man-
ager at the helm of their
operations.
On Monday, during
an Aqua Board of Direc-
tors meeting, a unani-
mous decision was made
to hire William Loven of
Austin to replace long-
time general manager
John Burke, according
to Board President Cliff
Kessler.
The change was made
as a result of Burke ex-
pressing earlier this year
that he was looking to re-
tire from the corporation
by 2011, said Kessler
on Tuesday when asked
about the board's vote.
Burke will stay on
with Aqua through the
end of 2010, but will
move into the role of man-
ager of external affairs
in coming weeks where
he will be able to closely
work with Loven during
the transition process.
