Bastrop County Democratic candidate meet
The Smithville American Legion
Hall was nearly full of Bastrop County
Democrats on Saturday evening, Oct.
3. The event was billed as a "Candi-
date Showcase" and candidates came
from all over the state. Several flew
nto the local airport, braving wind
and rain (and packed schedules) to ar-
rive there on time.
Candidates were as diverse as long-
serving U.S. Representative Lloyd Dog-
gett (Dist. 25), to aspiring candidate for
the U.S. Senator position John Sharp.
Standing in for his father, Will Winn,
the son of Houston Mayor Bill White
(who was confirmed but unable to land
his plane) spoke in his place. Other
state/district wide candidates (and of-
fices sought) were Austin's Mark Katz
(Lt. Governor), Jack McDonald (U.S.
Rep. Dist. 10), Jeff Weems (Railroad
Commissioner), Kurt Kuhn (3rd Court
of Appeals), and Lorenzo Sadun (State
Board of Education Dist. 10).
County-wide candidates also re-
ceived a very warm welcome from
the crowd. Incumbent County Judge
Ronnie McDonald, and County Com-
missioner Lee Dildy (precinct 4) and
his announced primary challenger
Michael Flowers were also present.
Rose Pietsch (county clerk), Cathy Oli-
ver Smith (district clerk), and Kathy
Schroeder (treasurer) were present
and all are running for re-election this
coming year. New challenger for the
justice of the peace position in pre-
cinct 1 was Dickie Henderson. Newly
elected County Chair Barbara Nichols
served as master of ceremonies for the
event.
Each candidate spoke to the group
for their allotted amount of time, while
attendees feasted on a barbecue din-
ner, complete with homemade desserts
and tea. The crowd of nearly 200 gave
rousing applause for the candidates
who spoke of their qualifications, posi-
tions on issues and the importance of
this upcoming 2010 non-presidential
election. For additional information

"Outlaws, Criminals, and Trials of Bastrop"
Author Lisa Lach will
tell the stories of outlaws,
criminals and famous tri-
als that took place in the
old courthouse family law
courtroom (old district
courtroom on the second
floor) at 7 p.m. on Oct.
15 in the Bastrop County
courthouse.
Lach was born and
raised in Hamilton, On-
tario, very near the New
York border. She is Cana-
dian by birth and speaks
fluent Italian and Eng-
lish and some French.
Her passion is Wild West
history and criminal law.
Lach maintains McDade
on the Roots web website,
is a lifetime member of
the McDade Society and a
member of the Wild West
History Association. As a
freelance author, she has
written several articles
for newspapers and small
publication magazines
and has published the fol-
lowing books: "Showdown
at McDade," "Laughing
Gas Rotten Rhymes" and
"Scraps of Hot Air."
After reading a book
about a Christmas hang-
ing in McDade, she decid-
ed to visit Bastrop County
and research the criminal
cases that were a part of
the story. Much to her de-
light, she found the Bas-
trop County Courthouse
offers some of the best-
preserved records in the
area. She has taken many
of these records and sub-
mitted them to Tammy
Owen's page on Roots web.
She also is donating all of
her court case research

wide rage of medical needs
both open and using laparo-

"I believe in bringing

why people don't want to

For 10 years, Lach
has come to the Bas-

discovered the tale is
slightly different from
the book she read on the
Christmas hangings.
Her second book will
be launched and off the

"Silent Night, Deadly
Night," about the lynch-

She has another book
planned, titled "The

Book Basket moves to Main St.

Special to the Advertiser
The Book Basket has
moved to a new and more
accessible location at 913
Main St. Owner Carol
Pennell re-opened the pop-
ular Bastrop book store
on Sept. 1, along with Ci
Ci, the official greeter dog
and her favorite chair up
front by the big windows.
The floor space is
smaller but cozier and the
features the Book Bas-
ket offers are the same,
including the Book Ex-
change.
Readers of paperback
books in good condition
can still bring in their
"gently read" books and
exchange them for a store
credit of 1/2 the original
price of the paperback.
The store credit can then
go towards purchasing
other used paperback
books.
Carol also offers an
audio book rental service
from the new store. These
rent for $3.99 per week
and the selections include
best selling novelists such
as James Patterson and
Stephanie Evanovich, au-
thor of the popular Stepha-
nie Plum mystery series, as
well as books from general
fiction.
New bestsellers such as
Dan Brown's latest novel,
"The Lost Symbol" are
prominently displayed.
Asked if the Book Bas-
ket has a specialty genre,
Carol thought a minute and
said, "Probably that would
be "Para-normal Romance."
A book signing by Dianna
Castilleja, a writer of this
type of fiction, very popular
in Bastrop, is planned for
November. The date is still
to be announced.
