CINCO DE MAYO AT MINA ELEMENTARY
Remembering a battle
BY TERRY HAGERTY
Assistant Editor
It might not be too far
a leap from a school Cinco
de Mayo celebration to
joining the circus.
Just ask Bethany
Smith, an animated eight-
year-old student at Mina
Elementary School.
"I want to be in the cir-
cus when I grow up,"
Smith said determinedly
as she waited in a Mina
Elementary School hall-
way on Tuesday. "My mom
was in the circus and my
dad was a champion track
runner."
Well, okay!
Smith was waiting to
perform for Mina
Elementary students and
staff as part of the
Estrellitas Mexican
Folklore Group for a
Cinco de Mayo celebra-
tion.
While classmates went
through last minute cos-
tume adjustments and
had makeup applied,
Smith chatted with the
Advertiser.
"It's a challenge to
learn all the dance steps
with Estrellitas," she said.
But her work with jazz
movements and ballet
with an area dance studio
has helped her a lot, she
added.
"And I'm going to play
soccer next year," Smith

performance by the Estrellitas Mexican Folklore Group,
said.
And then the stage
entrance call came, and
the colorful assemblage of
students headed out to
the gym floor.

Elda Walraven, the stu-
dents performed an Aztec
ceremonial dance for rain
and reenacted sacrificial
ceremonies. The students
at Mina clapped wildly.
(Cinco de Mayo com-
memorates May 5,1862,
when 4,000 Mexican sol-
diers under the leader-
ship of Mexican General
Ignacio Zaragoza Segum
smashed the French army
of 8,000 at the battle of
Puebla, Mexico, according
to Wikipedia. The out-
numbered Mexicans
defeated a much better
equipped French army
that had known no defeat
for almost 50 years.)
Walraven gives the
students of Estrellitas -
from Mina and Lost Pines
elementary schools -
much credit. They prac-
tice rigorously for two
hours per week under her
direction. Walraven
donates the costumes, her
time and the dancing les-
sons for free.
"It's my gift to the
community," she said.
