~ Housing, Care, and Accessibility of Records (First entry, p. 25)
The County Court meets in its courtroom in the south end of the
courthouse, on the first floor. The records of this court are kept by
the county clerk.
The Justice of the Peace of Precinct 1 has an office on the northeast
corner of the second floor. It houses 25 linear feet of steel
roller shelving for bound volumes, and 18 feet of wooden shelving for
case papers. Besides the justice's records, this office houses one
volume of constable's records and one of the inspector of hides and
animals.
The County Attorney has an office on the north side of the courthouse,
on the second floor. He has only one record, usually kept on
his desk. The office has extra chairs and a table for visitors.
F ~^ ~ The Sheriff has an office adjoining the district courtroom to the
west. The few volumes housed in this office are to be found on a counter
desk just to the left of the door. An extra table and chair provide
accommodations for visitors and those interested in the records of the
office.
The Constable has no office in the courthouse. His records are
kept in the office of the justice of the peace,
The Tax Assessor-Collector's department now occupies the office
space formerly given over to the separate departments of tax assessor
and tax collector. The old tax assessor's office is on the north side
of the building, and the collector's, across the hall to the south.
Each office has an adjoining vault. For convenience, this book will
refer to these rooms as north office and south office, considering
office and vault as a single unit, in each case. The north office
houses a total of 35 feet of wooden shelving and 15 feet of steel
shelving, all used to the fullest extent. It contains several large
tables for work space, and enough tables and chairs to accommodate
visitors who are interested in consulting the records housed there.
The south office is equipped with approximately 60 linear feet of
shelving, on which are housed some 25 linear feet of records. In addition
to records of the department, one file box of the county clerk's
records is housed in this Office. Work tables and chairs are provided
for the regular personnel of the department, and for visitors,
The County Treasurer has an office on the first floor, on the
north side of the building, A counter extends half across the room,
dividing it into private and public offices. Records of this department
are housed in the treasurer's vault, which adjoins the office to the
west.
The County Auditor has an office on the first floDr, on the north
side of the building, immediately across the corridor from the office
of the county treasurer. Records of the department are kept in 118
file boxes in the office, and on approximately 120 linear feet of wooden
C shelving in the vault. All housing units are filled completely, and
some of the records are being kept in rather crowded conditions.
