Rain a partial reprieve,
area firefighters caution
By Terry Hagerty
Assistant Editor
"I was changing tires
in the rain, but we'll take
being wet," Fire Chief Kevin
Gieselhart, with Roekne's
Five Points Volunteer Fire
Dept., said on Tuesday about
the recent rains.
Area fire chiefs say they
are thankful for the wet stuff,
but they remind area resi-
dents there is still a fire ban
in effect.
"We haven't been out
to any grass fires since it
rained, but if the rain quits
we'll be right back where we
were at," Bastrop Fire Chief
Henry Perry cautioned on
Tuesday.
"These rains are not
drought-busters, and right
now there is still a bum ban
in effect," Perry said.
Gieselhart agreed with
Pern that the benefit of the
rains could quickly pass.
"It was great that we got
almost three inches of rain
in Rockne — at the fire's sta-
tion rain gauge," Gieselhart
said.
'"But it's a two-fold ben-
efit, decreasing the chances
of brush fires but now every-
body's starting to bum stuff,
thinking they can bum mat-
tresses, which they can't."
Gieselhart said the rain
allowed firefighters to do
some station work.
"We were able to catch
up on maintenance issues
that needed to be handled,"
he said. "But you do the
math — if it rains only every
two weeks, then you get
back into the dry season. It's
really a revolving door of
weather."
Gieselhart added, "If we
get enough rain, I'm all for
letting people bum brush and
clear land, but I just encour-
age them to do it safely,
because burning your neigh-
bor's pasture is not good."
"All in all, everybody has
been pretty compliant with
the bum ban," Gieselhart
added.
(On Thursday, Bastrop
County Commissioners are
meeting in a special ses-
sion in the Commissioners
Courtroom at the courthouse
annex at 9 a.m. to discuss,
and possibly take action, on
the bum ban.)

DPS warns motorists about
school safety traffic zones
As Texas school chil-
dren prepare to head
back to school, the Texas
Department of Public Safety
reminds all drivers to watch
out for children walking to
school or waiting for school
buses—and to obey all traf-
fic laws related to school
buses.
"DPS has zero toler-
ance for vehicles that pass
stopped school buses," said
Col. Thomas A. Davis,
Jr., director of the DPS.
"Drivers must slow down,
obey school zone speed lim-
its and stop for school buses
to ensure
the safety of Texas school
children."
Drivers also need to slow
down and pay attention in
school zones.

ing of the Bastrop County

Children may not be
looking for oncoming traf-
fic when they step into the
roadway, so drivers must
remain alert. The most dan-
gerous time of a student's
journey on a school bus is
when they are entering or
exiting the bus, and state law
requires that approaching
drivers stop when a school
bus is stopped and operating
a visual signal (red flashing
lights or a stop sign).
State law: wait for
bus to proceed
Drivers should not pro-
ceed until the school bus
resumes motion; the driver
is signaled by the bus driver
to proceed: or the visual sig-
nal is no longer activated.
A driver does not have to
stop for a school bus if it is
on a highway with roadways
separated by an intervening
space or physical barrier.
(If a highway is divided
only by a left-turning lane,
the roadways are not sepa-
rated, and drivers must stop
for school buses.)
Punishment for drivers
who do not stop Drivers
who do not stop for school
buses face a fine of up to
$1,000. If a driver is con-
victed of this offense more
than one time, DPS can sus-
pend their license for up to
six months.

Officials recommend that drivers slow
down and stay alert on rain-slick streets.
The speed limit in the area is 65 miles
per hour on the Loop 150 overpass if you're
headed eastbound all the way until right
before you get to the bridge. However, the
speed limit is 55 heading westbound from
Tahitian Village all the way through town,
Hubbard said.
