was awarded the construction contract at $13,477. 35 On January 16 1879,
the courthouse was formally accepted by the court.36
With the building of its first courthouse, Gregg County inaugurated
a period of progress. By 1882 a third railroad, the Longview and Sabine
Valley, passed through the county seat and extended south to Panola County.?7
In 1873 the Alexander Institute was established in Kilgore, and
many smaller schools were opened in rural sections of the county.38
In 1896 the business of the county made it necessary to replace the
first courthouse with a new and larger one. The second building was constructed
in that year on the site of the old one.39
