County's sole trauma center gets re-designation
By Jacqueline Davis
Staff Writer
Smithville Regional
Hospital received re-desig-
nation status this month as a
Level IV trauma center,
meeting extensive criteria
outlined by the Texas
Department of Health,
Bureau of Emergency
Management.
The hospital first
received Level IV status in
2005, becoming Bastrop
County's only trauma center,
but every three years the
hospital comes up for re-
designation, said Theresa
Odom, the hospital's trauma
nurse coordinator.
Level IV refers to the
most basic form of trauma
centers, which are often
found in rural areas. They
evaluate and stabilize trau-
ma patients and transfer
them to higher-level trauma
centers.
Level IV trauma centers
can provide surgery, but
they are not required to do
so. There are 183 such facil-
ities in the state, according
to the Texas Department of
State Health Services.
"Because of the efforts of
the staff at Smithville
Regional Hospital, the peo-
ple of Bastrop County have
access to the highest quality
trauma services possible,
therefore decreasing the
additional death and disabil-
ity that occur when trauma
victims do not receive
immediate and appropriate
care," Odom said. "I am
very proud of our trauma
team and the excellent care
they provide."
To acquire the Level IV
designation, a hospital must
have a trauma medical
director, a trauma nurse
manager and have all emer-
gency room nurses trained
in the Trauma Nurse Core
Curriculum (TNCC), Odom
said. TNCC is an extensive
course that addresses multi-
ple types of injuries and the
standards of care for each
one.
A hospital also has to
have certain types of spe-
cialized equipment and have
a plan in place for quality
improvement that monitors
closely every trauma patient
that comes through the
emergency room, Odom
said.
Additionally, the
Smithville Regional
Hospital is required to pro-
vide Bastrop County with
injury prevention education,
with members represented at
local health fairs talking to
the community about safety
items like the importance of
using a helmet when riding a
bicycle and other helpful
tips, Odem said.
"The success of this
inspection shows a commit-
ment by the staff of
Smithville Regional
Hospital to provide quality
trauma care to the citizens of
Bastrop County," said Clare
Shelton, director of clinical
services.
Odom said the hospital is
not currently working
toward Level III status,
which requires 24/7 surgical
capabilities, among other
criteria.
