Bastrop 'Old Town' Visitor Center celebrates two years
The Bastrop "Old Town"
Visitor's Center is hosting a
celebration to commemorate
its second anniversary today
from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at 1016
Main Street.
2006-2008 principal
financial and business spon-
sors and volunteers will be
honored at this event and the
public is invited to attend.
Since opening its doors,
the Visitor Center has been
operating daily to offer
Bastrop visitors information
tailored to their specific
needs.
The importance of indi-
vidualized attention is clear
from the many reasons visi-
tors come to Bastrop: Some
come simply to dine or to
shop; others are sightseeing,
vacationing, searching for
their heritage or curious
about the quality of life here
because they are considering
Bastrop as a place to settle.
Bastrop has a steady and
broadly-based tourism busi-
ness, judging from the
records kept by the Visitor
Center since it opened in
June 2006.
Over 9,000 people have
passed through its doors.
Nearly 80 percent traveled
here from areas outside of
Bastrop County while 25
percent reside in other
states.
One in 20 came to
Bastrop from another coun-
try. One in five visitors reg-
istering at the center indi-
cates at least one night's stay
in Bastrop. Two-thirds of
center visitors stop in on
weekdays.
The flow of visitors com-
ing into the Visitor's Center
is consistent six of seven
days a week, including
Sunday afternoons.
Twice as many guests
come on Saturday as the
other days of the week,
largely because of the influx
of people attending special
downtown events such as
Pine Street Market Days and
Saturday Salebrations plus
Yesterfest, the Veteran's Day
Classic Car Show, Holiday
Homes Tour and Lighted
Christmas Parade.
"Because we have strong
Sunday traffic, we encour-
age all downtown retailers to
open their shops on
Sundays," said Cindye
Wolford, Visitor Center
director.
The Visitor's Center
would not be able to wel-
come visitors seven days a
week without its volunteers.
Wolford gives special
thanks to Associate Director
Burnie Cowan and 2008
weekly volunteers: Mary

Bastrop Municipal Court gets
award for traffic safety efforts
The Bastrop Municipal
Court was recognized for
efforts in traffic safety.
The court has been active
in addressing traffic safety
and has implemented several
community outreach pro-
grams, including participa-
tion in the 'Shattered
Dreams" program that is a
part of project graduation
and work with the police
department to ensure those
who do not have an infant
car seat may obtain one at no
cost.
Involvement in the
schools is also important to
Judge Phyllis Mathison,
who visits the younger chil-
dren on a regular basis and
reads to them. They have a
One-On-One program in
which the judge visits mid-
dle and high school and stu-
dents who are placed in the
school suspension program.
She also helped develop the
"Start" program, an outreach
for children of middle
address the increasing num-
ber of juvenile offenders.
The recent recognition
came from The Texas
