PREFACE
This survey of records in the Ector County Courthouse, a
project of the Regional Historical Resource Depository program
of the Texas State Library, has been undertaken to determine the
feasibility of inventorying public records in each of the 254
counties of Texas. Such a statewide survey of local records is
essential for two reasons. Since the RHRD program was created
in part to help organize and preserve historic local and regional
records, information concerning the volume and condition of the
material in Texas county courthouses is necessary so that the
depository program can determine how to best aid local records
officers in preserving these records. Thus, the survey will be
a planning tool of the State Library itself. In addition, the
inventory will provide useful and badly needed information for
historians, genealogists, and other researchers who until this
time have been hampered by a lack of knowledge of what records
are available in county courthouses.
The purpose of the proposed inventory series is to describe
the records as they now exist in county courthouses around the
state. Forms were designed to collect information pertaining to
the types of records, their physical condition, and their origin
and history; and to determine how the records are currently being
used. The information was compiled, and a draft copy was sent to
