Celebration
Continued from Page 1A
according to the Texas State
Historical Association. Two
years later the Caohuila and
Texas legislature renamed it
Mina — in honor of Francisco
Xavier Mina, a Mexican
hero.
In 1837, when the commu-
nity featured a general store,
hotel, gunsmith shop and
courthouse, it was incorpo-
rated under the laws of Texas
and the name was changed
back to Bastrop, the name
which stuck.
Activities get going full
steam today (Saturday) with
the 2 p.m. dedication in front
of the Bastrop VFD of a
bronze statue of a firefighter
rescuing a child, titled, "In
Moments of Valor."
It was sculpted by Clint
Howard and cast by his Deep
in the Heart Art Foundry. The
Dr. Dan Casias Fund helped
erect the statue and a special
presentation will be made
to his family. The Bastrop
Fire Station is located at 802
Chesnut (the intersection of
Chesnut and Water streets.)

Goodbye Bastrop!!!
You, my friends in Bastrop, have touched me in so
many ways, and enriched my life. It is time for me and
my family to move to the mountains of New Mexico
for the next chapter of adventure and change.
THANK YOU, my patients who are my friends
and family in Bastrop, for making the last 7 years
truly wonderful. It is a rare thing to enjoy a job
so much, and I treasure my memories of all the
times we shared in the snapshot
of clinic appointments. I understand
now what real community is all
about, and I thankyou for showing
me the love and goodness that
can exist there.
I will miss you all and will look forward
to the time when our paths will cross again.
Love and hugs and smiley faces,
Margaret Van Antwerp, nurse practitioner
