Granny pianos can be restored
Several times each week
in Bastrop County, piano
technician Michelle Smith
encounters mechanical mar-
vels that she calls "granny
pianos."These pianos are pre-
Depression upright or grand
pianos characterized by their
large size and interesting
woodwork.
As the instruments
approach their 100th birthday
the main question Smith hears
is, "What do we do with this
thing?" Nothing lives for-
ever, but the beautiful wood-
work and carvings kindle and
stoke a nostalgic spirit.
At the beginning of the
20th century, there were
approximately 300 piano
companies in the Chicago
area and another 300 in New
York. Most were small, fam-
ily-owned operations that put
lots of love and craftsmanship
into what are now granny pia-
nos. The Depression hit hard
and by the 1940s only a hand-
ful of companies survived,
opting for the efficiency of
the assembly line over the
art of building one piano at
a time.
Fast-forward to the 21st
century and Main Street
Bastrop where modern pianos
may not look right in historic
homes. So what are history
lovers to do?
Smith says there are sever-
al options. These may include
minor repairs or major sur-
gery. However, the high cost
of restoration can be discour-
aging. But there are creative
solutions, said Smith.
For advice contact Smith at
(512) 466-0238 or michellel®

Richard Cs. Mangiamele, BC-
HIS, ACA, a hearing health
professional iu Bastrop.
According to
Mangiamele: "This coun-
try and our community must
stop treating hearing loss as
a minor problem. Research
shows that when people can-
not hear properly, they make
less money and their inabil-
ity to hear can disrupt fam-
ily life.
"The good news is that
hearing loss can easily be
diagnosed and for most peo-
ple there are solutions in the
form of digital and program-
mable hearing aids, many of
which are not visible."
