The inventory of Hidalgo County courthouse records was conducted by Pan American University students under the supervision of Dr. Lillian Noyes and Dr. James Irby from 1975 to 1976. Staff members of the Texas County Records Inventory Project completed recheck and verification of the inventory in 1978.--See Preface, p. ix.

These materials include a 1633 map, America Noviter Delineata; H. K. Yoakum's History of Texas, and Exploration of the Red River of Louisiana, in the year 1852 by Randolph B. Marcy.
This ambitious project began in 1936 under the auspices of the Work Projects Administration (WPA) and continued until 1942, producing 24 inventories of Texas county archives.
