Population of the county grew from a reported 4,725 in 1880 to
19,004 in 1940 before declines started in the 1950's.
Graham, the county seat and industrial center, has some
7,700 residents. Olney, the agribusiness center of the county,
claims another 3,730 residents. Main businesses of the county
include petroleum, agribusiness, and tourism.
Possum Kingdom and Lake Graham provide recreational
facilities for the county's residents.
Young County has a rich historical heritage including the
restored fort at Fort Belknap State Park, the site of a large
Indian Reservation, and the site in Graham where the forerunner
of the Texas and Southwest Cattle Raisers' Association was
formed.
Young County operates under the Constitution of 1876
which outlines the major offices of county government and their
functions.
COUNTY CLERK
There shall be elected for each county, by the qualified
voters, a County Clerk, who shall hold his office for
four years, who shall be clerk of the County and Commissioners
Courts and recorder of the county, whose duties,
perquisites and fees of office shall be prescribed by the
Legislature, and a vacancy in whose office shall be filled
by the Commissioners Court until the next general election;
provided that in counties having a population of less than
8,000 persons there may be an election of a single Clerk,
who shall perform the duties of District and County
Clerks.1
