Obituary
Mary Johneva Toliver was born to the union of the late Jeffery
and Callie Ethel (Nevels) Marshall, December 25th, 1932 in Plum
(Fayette County) Texas. As a child she moved to San Antonio,
Texas. She was Baptized at an early age under the Ministry of
Rev. J. L. Taylor of Union Baptist Church.
Johneva graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School, and later
obtained an Associate of Arts Degree from St. Philips College in
1953. Her concentration was Home Economics. This Degree laid
the foundation for her employment in the Dietary Department at
the Baptist Memorial Hospital from which, after forty years of
dedicated service, she retired in 1993.
Johneva was united in Holy Matrimony to Richard Cornelius
Toliver on November 27, 1954. After this Union, she joined her
husband and became a member of the Friendship Baptist Church.
The various duties she performed in the Church were numerous
where she worked with the Mission, Sunday School, and Ministers'
Wives and Deacons' Wives. She was a faithful leader of the Junior
Mission in the Guadalupe District Association.
Johneva's special talent was organizing, preparing, and serving
delicious meals for various functions and many occasions. For many
years she was an expert seamstress. Serving and giving to others
was truly Johneva's calling.
Johneva was called from Labor to Rest June 16, 2009. Cherishing
her memory of fifty-four beautiful years of marriage, is her husband
Richard, a Daughter, Wilma Nell Jones; Grandchildren Ron, Kenya,
Christopher, four Great grandchildren, God-daughters, Wanda
Smith, Cristal Smith and Adrienne Reed, a Sister, Valerie Roberson
of Gary Indiana, a Brother, Matthew (Nite) Marshall (Gracie) of
San Antonio, Texas, Sister-in-law Thelma Marshall of Washington,
D.C. Brother-in-law George Toliver of San Antonio, Texas. Brothers
Oscar Marshall, Allen Marshall and Sisters Dorothy Marshall and
Jeffrey Louise Roberson preceded her in death.
Special Friends: Johnnie Smith, Edith Denkins, and Rose
Richardson; A host of nephews, nieces, great, great-great and
great, great, great, nieces and nephews, relatives and friends.
