John Dudley McDonald, Jr., the second of six children, was
born to the union of John Dudley McDonald, Sr. and Lucy
McDonald, in Piano, Texas. John expressed his Christian
faith in God early and joined the Shiloh Baptist Church with
his family.
Early education for John was received in the Piano and
Dallas Public Schools. Later, he earned his Bachelor of Arts
Degree at Bishop College, Marshall, Texas; afterwhich his
professional career began as a teacher in Naples, Texas.
In 1935, he married his college sweetheart, Ethel Vivian
Sullivan, at her home in San Antonio, Texas. Two children
were born to this union.
In 1942, he was drafted into the United States Army;
honorably discharged in 1945, then made his home in San
Antonio. He joined Second Baptist Church and became a
faithful and dedicated worker in the Sunday School and Junior
Church.
Mr. McDonald was one of nine charter members who
organized the San Antonio Delta Rho Lambda Chapter of
Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., 1949.
Areas of employment for Mr. McDonald include.
Educational Advisor in the Civilian Conservation Corps.,
Mount Pleasant and Jacksonville, Texas; U.S.O. Director,
Paris, Texas; Manager for the San Antonio Housing Authority
at Lincoln Courts, East Terrace and Sutton Homes. Lastly, a
self-employed licensed plumber.
Interest in young people was his priority and was expressed
first in his organization of a stage band and sports, while
teaching in Naples, Texas; his participation in the Young
Men's Christian Association; and in his promotion of projects
for children while employed at the Lincoln Courts. He was an
ardent supporter and solicitor of toys and Christmas gifts for
needy children, an annual project sponsored by his fraternity.
On Sunday, March 16, 1986, after a lengthy illness, he passed
away. Two sisters preceded him in death, Mrs. Mattie Lou
Laurence and Mrs. Mary Kate Stanifer.
He is survived by his wife of 50 years, Mrs. Ethel V.
McDonald; two daughters, Mrs. Barbara Smith of San Antonio
and Mrs. Carolyn Moore of Dallas, Texas; six grandchildren,
Mrs. Vicky White of El Paso, Texas; Mrs. Simone Kidd, John
Eric, James Evan, Jared Eryn Smith of San Antonio and Alex
Moore III of Dallas, Texas. There are slso four great
grandchildren, Brian Christopher and Nina Shari Kidd,
Lonnie Leroy White III and Brand Sha Smith; two sisters, Mrs.
Jimmie Ruth Phillips of Prairie View, Texas, Miss Elwena
McDonald of San Antonio, Texas; and one brother, Mr.
Clinton C. McDonald of Garland, Texas; a host of nephews,
nieces, other relatives and friends.
