"A rose by any other name would smell as
sweet."
The name of the rose, Mattie Taylor Jernigan
was born to the union of John and Kate Taylor in
Giddings, Fayette County, Texas.
She moved with her family to San Antonio and
united with Mt. Zion First Baptist Church while
it was still part of the "Baptist Settlement." Her
father, John Wesley "Uncle Johnny," was a
Deacon and one of the settlement saints.
Flem pucker claimed her in marriage in 1917
and to that union was born one daughter, Lena
Belle.
September 1, 1921, she married Alexander
Robert Jernigan and their united family
included Robert, Lena Belle, Oner Lee, and Lena
Katheryn.
Her many years of membership at First
Baptist found her in service in the Senior Choir,
Teacher in B.Y.P.U., membership in Mission
No. 38 and many active years helping with young
people of the church as "her" children grew up
"inthe church."
She was preceded in death by her husband of
sixty-two years and left this life October 21,1988.
She leaves to mourn her passing, two
daughters, Lena Belle McMillan and Lena
Katheryn Smith; one granddaughter, Doris Jean
McMillan; two grandsons, Brian Andrew and
Brent David Hughes, and one great grandson,
Alexander Raymond Wesley McMillan, and a
host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and
friends.
"A gentle life well spent, a passing rejoiced in as
the surety of resting in the Divine."
