Retired Miami Heat guard telis radio show host he
hates gay people, thinks they have no place in world
Associated Press
MIAMI — Retired Miami Heat
guard Tim Hardaway said
Wednesday, Feb. 14 that he hates
gay people* but later said he regret-
ted the remarks.
Hardaway's apology, however,
came too late for the NBA, which
immediately removed him from any
further appearances representing the
association.
In explaining the action, NBA
Commissioner David Stern said in a
written statement, "It is inappropri-
ate for him to be representing us
given the disparity between his

Gay man alleges female
co-workers bullied him
Former clerk claims 42 months of harassment left him
unable to perform his job effectively, led to his firing
By David Webb Staff Writer
A gay man filed a complaint with
the Equal Employment Opportunity
Commission this week alleging that
nine women he worked with in a
billing department at UT
Southwestern Medical Center had
made his life a living hell.
Sid Gonzales, 42, said the women
bullied him, made disparaging
remarks about gay and lesbian people
and forced him to comply with a spe-
cial set of rules. The former billing
specialist, who worked in the depart-
ment for almost three-and-one-half
years before he was fired on Feb. 12,
said he was not allowed to go to the
restroom, to breaks or to lunch without
permission from a coworker, who was

Gonzales said the women continu-
ously mocked him in exaggerated
voices that were meant to sound like a

Wichita alls plans 1st AIDS run
5K run will kick off 20th
anniversary celebration
for MCC congregation
By David Webb Staff Writer
It's going to be a spring of "firsts"
for Wichita Falls Metropolitan
Community Church.
The church's 20th anniversary cele-
bration will kick off on Saturday, April
28, with the city's first AIDS run,
which will be called "Say It Loud,
Save a Life."
That will be followed by an AIDS
service on Sunday, a three-day revival
and appearances by the denomina-
tion's founder, the Rev. Troy Perry, the
San Francisco Metropolitan
Community Church's chofrj and
Stephanie Smith, artistic director of
the Lesbian Gay Chorus of San
Francisco, who is a Wichita Falls
native.
And the Wichita Falls church's for-
mer pastor of six years, the Rev.
Margaret Walker of Abilene, will
return to the church to preach a ser-
mon.
The Rev. Lea Brown, pastor of the
church, noted it would be the first time
the church has had such prominent
guests and a three-day revival.
"We're starting to get revved up for
everything," said Brown. "It's pretty
exciting."
Brown said arranging the celebra-
tion was not as hard as some might
think.
"I just asked," Brown said.
Brown said the theme for the 20th
anniversary celebration is being taken
from Joel 2:26, which includes the
phrase, "My people shall never be
ashamed."
"That's what it is all about," Brown

suspected of also being gay, his super-
visor's supervisor and the school's
office of equal opportunity and minor-
ity affairs. Although his complaints
sometimes led to promises of relief,
the abuse continued, he said.
At one point, one of the women
made up a story claiming he had told
her that he saw his supervisor in a gay
bar, Gonzales said.
"That was not true," Gonzales said.
"I said that we belonged to the same
gym."
Gonzales said he was eventually
told by the supervisor, whom he sus-
pected of being afraid because he was
closeted, that there was no way to con-
trol the women and that he would
