How to Get It Back

By J.S.Hall Contributing Writer
"The Conservative Soul: How We Lost It, How To Get It
Back," by Andrew Sullivan. (HarperCollins, October
2006) 304 pp., $25.95.
It's an understatement to say that Andrew
Sullivan annoys some members of the gay com-
munity. A political conservative and practicing
Catholic, who happens to be openly gay and
HIV-positive, he edited "The New Republic" for
five years and became one of the most widely-
read entities in the blogosphere.
Sullivan also supported George W. Bush's
first presidency. And he ignited a firestorm of
controversy when bis barebacking advertise-
ments on the Internet were exposed.
How — many gays have asked — can
Sullivan support the Republican Party when so
many of its members hate or fear homosexuals
like him?
The answer, as Sullivan reveals in "The
Conservative Soul," is that he cannot do so any
longer.
Sullivan explains that the type of Republican
most people consider "conservative" these days
are actually what he calls "fundamentalists" in
nature. These fundamentalists — and George W.
Bush in particular — have betrayed their party's
traditions in spending, size of government, secu-
rity and personal liberties.
While this is hardly news to most critics of
Dubya's reign, the message might finally get
through to moderate Republicans. Conservatives
have watched with dismay as spending soars, the
government sprawls, citizens' phones are secret-
ly wiretapped and torturing war prisoners is tac-
itly condoned.
"America went from being a constitutional
republic, under the law, to an imperium of one
man, answerable only to an election every four
years, empowered to break any law and violate
any moral law if he believes it is necessary for
national security," Sullivan writes.
Sullivan goes on to label the war in Iraq as
"an ideologically driven hallucination." He also
criticizes Bush's supporters for equating criti-
cism of the war "as a form of treachery or
alliance with the enemy, rather than a simple,
empirical question about what we were doing
and whether it was effective."
In the first part of "The Conservative Soul,"
Sullivan takes readers on a guided tour of the
