He waited for a returning glance. It was an imaginative
connection brought on by a hot bath and the scent of a

A BLESSED EVENT: "Camp Out" screens Sunday at 2:15 p.m.
Camp Out
The claim that "Camp Out" covers "the first gay
Christian Bible camp" may be overstated But in
2004, it was the first time tor 10 young people in
Deerwood, Minn., and the first time such a camp
has been documented in a feature film.
Like a condensed season of "The Real
World," "Camp Out" sticks closely to that
show's format of editing events and having indi-
viduals comment on them "privately."
Pastors Jay and Brad from Bethany Lutheran
Church in Minneapolis organize the camp. A
flashback shows Jay being ordained by his
church, even though the denomination still bans
non-celibate gays from ministry.
Several of the campers — six male and four
female, aged 15-18 — admit they're there more
for social than spiritual reasons. The friendships
that are formed transcend gender lines.
With religious services and hymn singing
around a campfire, volleyball, canoeing and a tal-
ent show, it's like any Bible camp, except here,
gays and lesbians don't have to hide who they
are. And that's a big difference
Kirk Marcolina and Larry Grimaldi are the
camp followers who put "Camp Out" together.
For gay Christian teens who remain closeted or
outcast in their churches and schools it's a
blessed event.

Citizen Lobbyist
You'll learn a lot about transgendered people
from these two documentaries. But it's question-
able whether you'll gain more sympathy for
them.
The film that's technically weaker makes the
stronger case. "Citizen Lobbyist" is an amateur-
ishly shot, bare-bones documentary — essential-
ly a home video — about the National
Transgender Advocacy Coalition's 2004 lobby-
ing effort in Washington, D.C.
It's a learning experience for some two dozen
activists trying to get gender identity added to the
Employment Non-Discrimination Act and Local
Law Enforcement Enhancement Act (formerly
the Hate Crimes Prevention Act). They tell their
stories to the camera and anyone who will listen
but have little impact.
Several people introduce themselves at the
beginning but are never identified again. And
there are people who give lengthy speeches (was
there an editor?) without being identified at all.
Timothy Watts has the unusual credit: "pro-
duced, directed and financed by."
Watts is no filmmaker, but he lets his subjects
get their point across and win your admiration.
They've got balls, though — not literally in some
cases.
"Citizen Lobbyist" brings out the high unem-
ployment rate (said to be 50 percent) among the

Temporary hair removal methods such as waxing, depilatories and
threading can actually increase hair growth. For permanent hair
removal, electrolysis is the only choice. It works almost anywhere on
the body - face, legs, under-arms, abdomen, back and bikini line.
And it's effective on light or dark hair.
