Bill Bullard
Bill Bullard is a costume designer who outfits the casts of the Garland Civic Theater, Uptown
Players and other production companies. This year, he and his design partner, Susie Shankle,
received the Leon Rabin Award for the costumes in "Kiss of the Spider Woman," and the
Theater Critics Award for their work on "Red Scare on Sunset Boulevard." The design duo
worked on the Janine Turner film, "Trip in a Summer Dress," which premiered in Dallas this
year. Bullard, a former nurse, began designing costumes 10 years ago when he was asked for
help on a play.
How irnportant is your work to you?
If it wasn't for costume designing, I probably wouldn't be here. It's given me an incentive to
get up and go in the morning, even with all of the medication I'm on. I have a place to be. It's
pretty much everything. The people I've met have been a total inspiration.
What's it like behind the scenes of a play designing costumes and outfitting the actors?
It's amflzing to see, once they've cast the show and started rehearsal, how quickly everything
seems to go together. The amateur thespians in Dallas just blow me away because they are
able to accomplish so much in such little time and do such a fabulous job.
What do you enjoy most about working in the theater?
There's lots of pretty boys — lots of nearly naked pretty boys. It really is the most fulfilling
thiagpfve ever done. This is just one up after the other. Everybody asks me which show was
my favorite, and it truly is the one I'm working on at the moment. Everything and everybody
just keeps getting better and better.
What sort of relationship do you have with the actors?
They Bompare me to a mother hen because I stick with the show from its inception all the way
through. Once the costumes are delivered I stay there helping with show, doing the laundry,
keeping all the zippers zipping and all of the buttons buttoning. I develop a rapport with them.
What « as your reaction to winning the awards, and what does it mean for the future?
Ev«y6ne has all along said that I'm truly skilled in the craft and that I deserve recognition,
but until it is something tangible to hold in your hand, you just kind of pooh-pooh it all. It
really was exciting. I did remember to thank the person who got me involved in 1997.1 want
to just continue on with it as best I can with whatever comes up.
